No improvement in SERP. Could the " modified theme" be a reason?

About an year ago, my site had silo structure and after it started ranking, then I changed its theme to some free wordpress theme. I tried some themes, but for many the rankings dropped drastically.

Though I finally found a theme in which ranking stayed stable, I also customized the theme as per my liking with the help of a developer.

But since then I have not been able to improve the dropped rankings. I have tried everything possible but my site's rankings have frozen. I dont know if site has been penalized or the theme could be a reason. Is switching to silo structure with which site had high-rankings in intiall few months only option?

    Dont know the solution.

P.S: I have never received any warning or message in webmasters tool.

    Regard

If your site got penalized means you will get information update about it.
Maybe your theme modification is a reason because if that is not related to your niche means ranking will get reduced.
Go and check it with webmaster tools you may get a solution I think.

What exactly have you been doing to improve the rank?

There are basically two ways this has gone down:

    1. You haven't done enough to improve your ranking.
    2. You've "overcooked" it and triggered a filter like Panda / Penguin.

If you've triggered an automated filter it's unlikely you'll ever get a webmaster tools message.

You may be right.A new theme in itself will not make any different to your rankings, but it may if that theme presents your data in a different way or in a different order in your HTML. Search engines read your HTML in a linear manner. This might not be in the same order as it is presented on the screen. Content boxes and tables can be used to present your content in a different order to how the HTML expresses the page source code. If you change a theme with a right hand sidebar with one with a left hand sidebar, the spiders will usually see the sidebar content before the main text. This will likely affect your ranking.

I have data in my articles which I presented through rows and columns. Tables were basic in structure.Ranking dropped especially in those themes which changed the look of these tables or made them more glamourous.

Please let me know more about how can I correct this.

Are the new keywords/phrases and articles ranking fine?
Were there any changes to your rankings in other search engines or just Google?
Does your site have any crawler issues? Robots.txt is fine and you don't have the tick box for discouraging indexing on in WP correct?
Have you tried linking the date the drops occurred to any algorithm releases from Google?

It could be an automatic penalty but you're best off eliminating all other possibilities first before assuming the worst.

    1. Keywords often move up and down. They have been consistent over past several months. But only 2 months ago, I started some serious link building, but it hasn't have any positive impact over the ranking on the keywords for which I worked.
    2. I only followed google so not sure about other search engines.
    3. As per webmasters, there are no crawler issues. No, I have not enable discouaging indexing.
    4. During updates, there was no rankings drop. Only when I changed to some WP themes that tempered with tables within the articles.
