I don't get the point of welfare in the United States, why don't they have workfare? If your going to be giving money out,at least make people work for it if they are physically able to do so.

They tried that in the 90s and it was mostly overturned in 2009.

Honestly I believe the government wants people to remain dependent on it. How else can you retain your power over people if they no longer need you?

If we make people work for money, its demeaning to them. Thats why we changed the name of food stamps and welfare, so there is not a negative connotation to accepting the money. That said in a lot of poor areas, the only ATM you will find is in the liquor store -- due to no other stores in the area!.

This. Not everyone has an opportunity, but dammit everyone has an excuse and someone to blame. The worst thing is the government has to go along with this because if they leave the "less fortunate" (a term i despise because it implies luck as opposed to hard work) to fend for themselves, they don't get re-elected because not helping people is baaaaaad mmkay.

sounds like the UK....you have whole generations who now demand the tax payer pays them money for nothing. OH and they tried to cap it at £26k per annum oer fmaily and there was uproar....load of B*S*. £26k p.a. benefits is way more than enough for doing f*** all!

You had families living in 4 bedrooemd houses in Londoin complaining this wasn't enoguh for them to "live on" Sake. If I can't afford to live in Kensington guess what? I do not live there.
