someone suggested that if you are a good seo, then you shouldn't get clients and promote their sites. you would do much better if you make and promote your own sites. This got me thinking...if this is true, then why do seo companies exist?
so is this true or false?
I think it's false. because for example, if I am promoting a plumber's site, I wouldn't want this to be my own site. I wouldnt want to be a plumber and learn how to install pipes and unclog the toilet. I would rather promote the site and leave the rest for the plumber to figure out.

IM is vast... keyword research, content creation, copywriting, SEO, website design, graphics and a whole lot more that others would add.

Very difficult for anyone to be good at or excel at everything... so its easier to focus on what you are good at and leave the rest to others.

Depends. it is not ment like you got it. it isment to bemore lucrative to put own (web) projects and push those instead of clients. but personally i think often some providers lacking of ideas and it is more comfy to them to rank only sites, but not to care about business stuff, finding aff offers to promote and so on...

Think of it as another way to monetize. Choose your preference.
    Rank personal sites = $$$
    Rank client sites = $$$

I am sure if they offer seo services they also have personal sites they are working on.

You may be good in SEO and bad in product creation.
Why do you see advertising agencies, following your advise they should start creating their own products, e.g. never promote iPhone and create their own phones.

Try to look up such term as division of labour.

I guess your reputation answer your question lmao.

Thats not true for sure. Think about local businesses for example... If you dont pick those (at least in your city) you are leaving money on the table - simple as that.

HOWEVER, I gotta tell you that you are also "kinda" right. Because I have been see this for long time. Many people (not in this forum, because BHW MODs only accept quality seo providers) are selling SEO services and dont know shit about what they are doing.

Maybe you want to provide SEO services but you do it as a middle man. You know what to do but you chose to farm it out to qualified experts. You client wants 100 links a month you farm it out for $25 and charge $100. There are many ways to skin a cat.

Whenever I see SEO companies I just think if they are really that good at SEO they would have promoted their own websites and be on pace to retire soon. Once you are capable of consistently ranking sites, you can make more money than you would ever need.

Why work for everyone else when you can make six or 7 figures in your underwear eating bon bons all day?

But if you rank many different sites, wouldn't you have to learn a bunch of trades? I could rank a plumber's site and a hairdresser's site and a dentist's site...but I wouldnt want to learn how to cut hair and how to do plumbing and I most certainly would not want to go to dentistry school.

From what I see, most of the time the guys that do SEO have their own personal sites that bring in money, and they also provide a service offering SEO services

Was thinking about something similar just the other day. What I realized is that most people here take doing loads of very different things on their own for granted. Website creation, content writing, SEO, promotion, etc. If you think about it, these are all very different tasks.

Imagine a plumber who built and decorated his own shop by himself, does all the plumbing work and runs an adwords campaign for his own business. I don't think there's that many plumbers out there (if any) who do it like this. Instead most focuses on what they know best (plumbing) and pay others for those things.

Same goes with SEOs, it's easier to focus on what you're good at then trying to do everything at once.

Also the level of ambition that is needed for IM is arguably higher then for most other careers. Most people don't have the level of ambition (or are just lazy) to build their own websites and would rather work as a service provider.

Bottom line, it's either fear, lack of ambition or laziness. (Or they actually don't know what they're doing)

SEO and getting traffic is one thing. Monetizing said traffic is another. It's like saying if traffic is so good, why would people sell it? Well, I bet Google would rather sell clicks then try to monetize them themselves.

I see no reason not to promote others

The only time I would say no is if they were targeting something I was actively targeting... Which isn't often

By doing SEO for someone you're only completing 10% of the equation

Promoting a product and creating a product are very different things. The reason it is so lucrative to rank clients websites is that you don't have to create the product; the profitable website/business behind it.

I provide services for real businesses. If I were to create a website to compete with my clients, I could probably rank above them, but then I would need to understand and run their business. I don't want to run their business, I want to run mine.

With that said, I do both, I have my own sites for link building, reputation management and CPA and do a lot of work for my clients.

This is a question that has worried me for ages. Is nice to see the different opinions here and I look forward to reading more. They all make very good points. I was always thinking if they were that good and could guarantee results why not just build and promote their own sites....
