    Hi,
Not so long ago google has announced changes in how they perceive nofollow links. I'm pretty sure it caused a big stir in the seo community that time but somehow I missed the news about it.

Is there any trustworthy case studies out there that examine the effect of nofollow link changes?
More importantly can we rank sites with nofollow now?
I secretly hoped that there was going to be a nofollow bonanza and suddenly all my sites skyrocket to the first spot but this has not yet materialized.

In my experience nofollow links have been just as valuable as follow links. I've ranked low volume keywords words with just a few nofollow links, so I know it works.

Will you be able to rank high volume words with just nofollow links? I doubt it, but you should always have a mix of both to keep it looking natural anyway.

I got a ton of nofollow as a natural process of automated link building but I tend to neglect them when indexing. I always thought nofollow links only worth something if they bring traffic which is rarely a case with the type of tools I work with. So basically I haven't bothered even testing them.

For sure nofollow links have value. But not all. A lot of websites provide no indexing opportunity so nofollow doesn't index.

Check neil patel on it and he has examined positive effects of no follow link.

No follow links don’t help to rank but they’re yet valuable you should add them to diversify your link profile

I think nofollow links are used for increasing your website traffic, not for ranking.

Google purposefully puts out information to confuse people. No-follow links certainly may help rankings, but not in the same way as follow ones would.

There has been a study of whether Google follows no-follow links, and the conclusion was that it didn't (verified by following the crawler through the server logs). Link juice in its basic "power" form is unlikely to be transferred.

However, where I think they will be counted is in the parts of the algorithm that assess whether the page/website is trustworthy. Google is likely still to check for over-optimisation of anchor text for example, and no-follow links (in my experience) are taken into consideration in this assessment.

While no-follow links are unlikely to pass link juice, they probably do contribute to other signals of quality. If two pages are otherwise identical except that one has a link from a no-follow authority site (such as Wikipedia), the no-follow link probably will make a difference in that the page is deemed to be higher quality.

No follow link from high authority site has good value. Drives referral traffic and makes link profile natural.

That's clear cut but I build crappy links on crappy websites. I only strive for ranking gains not traffic.

Both of them are an asset, when it comes to link-profile.

Nofollow links work in a similar fashion as citations for Google My Business.

They mostly pass on trust into your website when they come from the right sources with contextual background.

    Example:
You have a website about vegetarian cats and you have a no-follow link on a petlovers blog linking back to your site.

Google now has an extra contextual connection of what your page is about (pets) which helps the algorithm to determine if your website content is relevant for search queries related to pets.

Yeah, I get that the nofollow links did this before the changes but are they any different now?
What I'm trying to asses is how much ranking power they provide following the changes in Google algorithm.

Bring referral traffic if you place it on sites with traffic. Following the changes do they have value on sites that has no traffic?
