A “Nigerian prince” who amassed a fortune is in trouble, and even gullible Gmail recipients may not be able to help him.

Interpol announced that it had arrested a West African 40-year-old believed to be behind an email scam that conned $60 million from hundreds of victims.

The agency only identified the man as “Mike” from Nigeria, and said that he specifically targeted small businesses around the world with a team of dozens based in his country, South Africa and Malaysia.

His team posed as business executives and vendors to con their victims, including one that Interpol says paid out more than $15 million.

It was not clear if anyone on Mike’s team ever pretended to be wealthy royals who found themselves in need of a few bucks from unsuspecting Hotmail users.

The accused fraudster earned the nickname "Nigerian prince" after internet users likened his alleged con to spam emails from supposed West African royals.

However, the ringleader’s nationality and alleged con has earned him the title of “Nigerian prince.”

“Mike” was arrested in southern Nigeria’s Port Harcourt in June with the help of the country’s anti-fraud authorities, according to Interpol.

He is currently out on bail along with a 38-year-old accomplice.

Maybe, maybe not - it always seems that governments penalise crimes that involve a lot of cash much more heavily than any other types of crimes.

Anyway, at least those nigerian lottery emails will stop now :)

    This is stunt bullshit.

Get real please, we're talking about one of the most corrupt countries in Africa (my homeland). We all know damn well how this went down - he paid some front man to take the hit for him, the nigerian government to collaborate the story with interpol, and is currently (lemme take out my magic 8 ball for this) sipping a margarita in the Caribbean and watching from a distance.

  16. Dear Sir

    Hi, I'm Prince Mike.

My uncle just recently passed and left me with $340,000,000 that I would like to share with you if you can help me. My uncle lived in Texas and his money he left me is stuck in Texas.

I will send you a check from Bank Of America for $340,000,000 you can cash at your bank for me. You can keep $100,000,000 for yourself and send me the $240,000,000 just for helping me out.

    Your Dear Friend, Prince Mike
