Not to be glib...but the most as possible you can rank for. That said...if your just starting out, you want to have SOME success and make something or else this whole thing can sink into despair.

When I started out I shot for 100 exact searches a day. (3,000 a month) You want to prove to yourself that you can pick a niche, get it ranked and make something...even it's a lousy .25 cents a day. (note: that's $81 a year, even with paying for the domain name you made money)g

Here's some advice which will save you 6 months of effort:

ONLY PICK A NICHE KEYWORD YOU CAN GET A .org/.net/.com domain. Exact matches on the domains will get extra SEO "juice" from the start. In my estimation, it's worth about 30-40 quality backlinks.

If you've chose correctly, when you get indexed you'll appear on page 1, and with some push, end up on #1 for your keyword.

As you add more domains, increase the daily searches.

Totally agree with you biks... .com has been the best for me though even above the others!

I started with around 3000 as well. Was easy enough if you build enough backlinks.

    Home Page:
try 2500 but use phrase match instead of broad. The real key is how high is your competition.

Using exact search, target AT LEAST 1000. But as those guys above said, try aim the biggest number you can.

And don't forget, it's the competition that matters the most. So watch that out too.

ok, I have been doing this all by hand... with no tools. Do you guys have any free tools to research the niche stuff? Market Samari and Niche tool both cost money.

Market Samurai has free Trial and i think it is fully functional.

i am starting in Microniche sites too. but i searched for 10,000/month and above. I am a newbie so i did not know that 10,000 / month is a bit high already.

I agree about the .com, .org, and the .net, but I've also had good success with .info, but I've gone in for a .info only when the other 3 were not available.

I do have a personal blog that's a .in (India) and that too has daily visitors in 4 figures without much effort in terms of SEO with most traffic coming in from USA and Canada (guess Google loves me blogging about Google).

If you are just starting out start small. I would even say pick a small niche that gets maybe 30-50 search a day. Why you ask? Well you aren't going to make a lot of money off this site, just enough to pay for the domain and hosting. This will help you learn how to deal with easy competition and build up your skills for later when you try to roll with the big dogs.

And I don't believe in the don't use .info. I have 2 .infos that I got ranked on the first page in a matter of weeks. It's all about compition and your marketing strategy.

What about adding a prefix or suffix to the keyword if the exact match domain is not available for com, net,org or info? Would take not rank as high as an exact match given the same onsite seo and offsite seo? Any feedback?

It'll help, just not as well. You still see plenty of this on google if you are looking for.

    poker.com
    pokernow.com
    bestpoker.com
    etc...

This is exactly how I end up with most of my niches. When you use something like Microniche finder you give it a word such as

    allergies

Microniche finder will come back with

    hayfever allergies
    plant allergies
    pet allergies

    ect.. ect.

But you want to try and keep it to the actual search term and dont just add "best" to the front of them or whatever prefix you come up with. As was said before, it may work but not as well as having the actual domain.

Then you find one that has a .com, .net .org available and has an exact search amount of 1000 - 10000 Of course this is what microniche finder is designed to do.

I've found some as high as 40,000 searches a month with little competition. Not very often but its possible. If you have the opportunity to spend $100 then MNF and MS are two pretty good places to start. They dont take %100 of the guesswork out but they give you a pretty decent idea.

    Cheers
