Alright, Ive done a ton of reading except there is one discrepancy I'm not so sure on... When using google keyword tool to do niche research.... Ive heard that 6,000 is a good number of exact searches for a profitable niche.

Does this mean 6,000 EXACT searches for your long tail keyword, or 6,000 for your root keyword? I'm guessing its 6,000 exact searches for your long tail keyword but I want to be sure.

Also, how do I know if i'll be able to get into the top 10? Ive found a long tail keyword on google that nobody targets directly Ex. "Best baby shoes alive" (There would be no site called bestbabyshoesalive etc...) but the search on google would turn up millions of webpages... with sites like Amazon, Wiki etc... I'm assuming that would be almost impossible to rank for?

Thanks a ton guys, Ive learned a lot from this site already, and cant wait till I can actually contribute my knowledge.

I'm also new but I use seoquake to check the competitions backlinks for that page and i also check if there are any emd's in the top ten. With the searches im pretty sure its the long tail keyword that should be checled for exact monthly searches. Also with googles new update its risky to get into a niche seeing as they seem to be trying to get rid or at least lower the rankings of the smaller niche sites so i'd wait till people know whats going on and theres a strategy to rank your site again, good luck
