    Hello everybody,

I'm thinking of starting a news website, but I've a question. I have a thight budget of about $100, so that's why I can't spend a lot on SEO. So should I just focus on driving traffic from social media to my articles instead of ranking in the search engines? I'll be montezing my website with AdSense ads.

    Thanks in advance.

Best thing is to focus on both. But if you gonna pick one, social media is probably best for your niche and budget. :)

Social media, as it gets quicker results.

People don't want to use a search engine to find a news story, here you're competing against genuine news sites etc who have $ millions in seo budgets.
What you are wanting is social media, quick updates, fast interaction and shares of your stuff.

    Is the $100 a day, a week or a month ?

You can't outrank all the media houses for any keywords, even if you'd spend $1k and people tend to read from the source, they trust.
So, you should focus on driving traffic from Social media, reddit, medium and other sites. Reach your audience and put your article in front of them, before they search for it and visit others.
Facebook and reddit could be gold for you, if done right.
    Good luck.

Also, don't ignore SEO, do some on page and off page seo. So, in the long run, Search engines can trust you and of course, until then you will get some organic traffic from Google as well.
Look at sites like Upworthy.com, their whole site is based off Facebook.

Social Media. SEO won't bring you results in news niche in a short time. You need a really really strong domain to rank for any news search queries as you can't build links to this articles over a few month. You need power to rank those articles as soon as you post them. Social media traffic is much easier in your case.

SEO is a long term project that you need to continue to improve rank, gain PR, DA, PA, CF, TF and so on. It will help to drive organic traffic to your site. But it takes time. So you need to drive traffic from social media with regular posting and engaging. It will sustain your business when you start getting sales and earn $$$$ to promote and invest in ranking your site(SEO)

The $100 is my startup budget. My budget looks like the following:

    $10 domain name

    $25 WordPress template

$12 hosting per month, I've reserved $36 of the budget to three months of hosting so it's $36

I'll write the articles myself, so until now the costs are $71.

Also thanks everybody for your help!

It's going to be difficult my friend, I had hoped that was your minimum monthly budget.
Good luck with it though and be prepared for the hard yards.

Thanks for your honest reply. I can have a $100 monthly budget, but I don't really see where I can use the money for with a news website. It's just domain, hosting, and a nice template right? Or am I missing something? Maybe marketing? I've earned well over $400 with another project, so I'm willing to spend all of that in the news website.

You need to be active on Twitter and Facebook mate, people want to read what is happening as it happens so you need to be there reporting, re-tweeting etc as this happen.
