Hi, guys. I need your advice.

I was several years out of business, and came back to SEO a few months ago. I am employed by news portal written in local language.

The thing is they have less than 10% of unique content, everything else is copied. I tried to persuade them to follow basic SEO rules when it comes to writing, but journalist don't care.

I want to do some offsite SEO and need you opinion. Do directories and links from profiles have any value in 2022? Will I get anything if I post an article on medium.com with the link to my portal?

What techniques do you suggest me? Keep in mind that these guys do not cooperate with me and don't want to use competition's keywords (they only from time to time accept my suggestion regarding trendy keywords).

"have less than 10% of unique content, everything else is copied" + "it comes to writing, but journalist don't care" = makes no sense. Those are not writers but copy/paste people one could hire for $1/hour.

Don't waste your time with profiles and directories. It's ok to have some links from company directories but they won't help you, you kinda need them because reputable businesses are listed there but SEO-wise they are next to useless.
Medium? Most of the posts there are "noindex" - so no help.

so, what exactly are you trying to achieve? Build links for the sake of building them, or did your boss tell you to rank his website for whatever keywords? And if your goal is to rank the website, do you have a budget or they won't even give you money for backlinks? Because quality links cost money, free links have been devalued by google for the most part...

If they're not giving you a monthly budget, and they refuse to cooperate in any way show them the middle finger and find another company. I'm not joking. I have aged 10 years between 2014 and 2016 when I've been employed by an offline company (owned by my own cousin, mind you) with toxic people around me, always preoccupied with digging me and making me look bad in the eyes of my cousin so that they can keep their jobs and manipulate him (he's very weak mentally, he can, and is, easily manipulated in whichever direction those fuckers want).... Seriously, if you value your time and mental health get out of that shithole and find a company that... 1) have a clear goal about what they want, 2) give you clear instructions on what you can, and can't do, 3) give you a budget to work with, and 4) actually care about your suggestions.

If, for whatever reason, you're so in love with those losers and wish to keep slaving away for this company then at least tell us what you're trying to achieve. Is it just building links for bragging rights. are you trying to achieve something with those links, are you in charge of the content planning, does that company operate locally only, or do they want global traffic and rankings? What exactly are you trying to do?

It's something like that. No clear goals, and I'm trying to get outta there, but until I'm stuck with them, I want to do something, just for the sake of showing that to managers and for my own ego

You guessed right, there is no budget and no clear plan. I'm excluded from the content planning, only giving suggestions from time to time. Sometimes it is accepted, sometimes it is not.

From my part, I wanted to at least try to boost site's DA and maybe rank on several keywords, so I can show some results (I succeded this with original content they wrote, but I'm unsure what else can I do about all that copied content). And, yes, we are only local news site.

Forget SEO, you need to quit that company on priority!

Why waste your time among people who do not value your contribution? Even if you build some links and try any SEO efforts at your own cost to them, they are anyways not going to see or recognize it. It appears to me that the management of your company is totally unaware about what SEO is so it ia guaranteed that they will never be able to recognize your hard work.

If you want to satisfy your own ego then start your own blog or website and start working on it in your spare time. It will be your own business and you will be rewarded for whatever hardwork you put in it.

It's not worth it, man, believe me! Just go to work to take their money and keep your mental sanity about you! People like them have limited evolution ceiling, they can't (and most of the time don't want) to break their limits, they're happy in their own mediocrity, digging others, laughing at those who try to improve even their situation, if you come up with a good suggestion they'll find a way to present it to your boss as their own suggestion while silently hating on you and trying to dig you even more, and so on. They're just not worth your attention and mental energy...

When you have a goal and a budget post again here, and someone will be able to give you a plan of action, but otherwise it's pretty hard for us to suggest anything when we don't know what you try to achieve.

Also, DA is not very important... well, DR neither, but at least DR can't be as easily inflated as DA, so you shouldn't focus on increasing the DA of their site. And if you absolutely must build some links, just for the sake of it, then go ahead and build some web 2.0s or profile links on high authority sites. These links won't help them much, but they won't harm their site either..

Just get a group buy membership for 1 month (it will cost you less than $10) to get access to some AI writer like Rytr, ArticleForge, etc so you can create content for the web 2.0s, generate 20-30 articles and post them on 20-30 popular web 2.0s and call it a SEO campaign

Understand this first: News sites are mostly politics. It's a larger subject to discuss, and most of top management decisions make sense if you take a bit of time to understand what this means

But.

When it comes to news sites and traffic, there are two options:
1. organic
2. social media shares

If 10% original, then your best shot is by using social media as weapon. I wouldn't focus on organic, it's a waste of time, since the most important aspect of the news is who's putting it out first.

I wouldn't advise investing in social media though at first. I'd automate it - on Facebook, Twitter, Medium as the only reliable traffic sources where user intent is pretty clear -, making sure the news articles have a featured image and an excerpt.

Considering the quality, I wouldn't rely on building backlinks, so no investment in that area either.

If the news are worthy, in time, you'll get traffic from social media. Then, if the traffic pays, you can suggest publishing original articles, and take the organic path. In the meantime, on-page wise, interlink, in preparation.

I work with a few news sites. Without social media, if the your news platform isn't strong enough, the revenue only comes via direct advertisment, especially political.

Don't waste your time doing organic if they don't want to spend. I understand your employer perfectly.

I now know that I only fooled myself that I can achieve something from nothing and blamed myself that my work isn't good.

Like you said, my only goal from now on is to take their money until they laid me off or I don't find another job.
