Are the 5 stars next to the post title the reputation of the poster?
I have been trying to determine how to evaluate some of the advice and services offered in BHW and am having trouble.

For instance, when shopping for services I find plenty of people requesting review copies but not many actual reviews of the service.

Is there a rule of thumb for determining a posters credibility?

The stars are not really an indication of value of the service or provider. For example anyone can rate their own thread as five star, and any competitor can rate their competitions thread as no stars, making the whole thing useless.

The star rating of a thread is meant for users to give the thread a rating based on the quality of the thread, although this rating system is flawed for a couple of reasons

    1. The creator of a thread can rate their own thread 5 stars.
    2. A competitor can and will give your thread a low rating to sabotage your thread.

I think the rating system is really abused here already. As mickyfu rightly said, they are in noway an indication of quality of the post. I hope the mods are working on a better system. I read about it somewhere last week.

Yeah stars are easy to alter.
Don't rely on them but more on the actual thread and check for reviews in it.

The simple answer is NO. The only exception is if the thread is superlatively informative and resourceful, it will garner lots of GENUINE stars.

I actually wonder how many members here rate threads. Maybe someone should create a poll on it. :D

Distinguishing between who/what is credible/trustworthy is something that requires brain work. You can't rely on star ratings alone, even if they are actually reliable.
