Does a link from a .edu have any more value than from .edu.com?
The answer would be, it depends on the whether the page/site had any real authority or trust in Google's eyes, irrespective of TLD. For example, does it have age, PR, links? Does it represent a legitimate educational establishment?

Now, if you're asking about companies that sell/rent an edu sub-domain, then I would avoid it.

Just for clarification, a .edu.com link is not a .edu link. It's a sub-domain link. A while back, some 'IM gurus' were making a fuss about buying .edu.pl domains; these domains have virtually no value compared to an established .edu authority site. Likewise, links on these sites are not .edu links.

If you're looking at fiverr gigs, and can't offer legitimate .edu links, it may be better just to scrape your own .edu sites and sell link packets.
