Half the people here have been saying high views counts are the most important thing for ranking, while others argue it's audience retention (ymeaning your video is watched all the way through). But with this new "Time Watched" feature it almost seems to me that Youtube is telling us the most important thing is total minutes of time watched! What do you guys think?

Forgetting mobile views (no view times) and full video viewing times (too slow to deliver), what if you bought hundreds of thousands of views from a fast delivering source like skittles to blast it right away with 30 second view times, you would have tons of minutes watched right away, then technically your rank would sky rocket and views would come naturally, right?

That's a theory. It could work.

BUT, what if the algo to choose rankings compare your videos with videos of the same length and decide that your 30 seconds lenght views are junk and demote your rankings?

That's another theory. I think we have just to start experimenting :)

I disagree with some of that theory DragonLord. My theory is as follows: YouTube wants to make as much money as possible. How will they make the most money possible? By promoting the videos that keep people on YouTube. By promoting videos people will share with others (hence bringing more people to YouTube). Video that are watched 100% the way through, YouTube says "wow, viewers are enjoying this video, thus enjoying YouTube" and will promote this video with higher ranking. I believe YouTube is also asking, "do these viewers watch additional videos after watching this or do they leave YouTube?" YouTube wants to promote videos that lead to people watching more videos because that means more revenue for YouTube. If people are sharing this video with others (facebook, twitter, etc...) I believe YouTube will promote the video higher because these actions lead to more views, more ads displayed, thus more revenue for YouTube.

Mobile views time do count. I have a high peak from u2bviews fast views. 50000 minutes watched on one video.
So I guess they it was never about high retention, just extreme views.

oww..found something interesting in the article:

"For example, we've heard from some creators who intentionally made their videos shorter in an attempt to get a higher retention rate. Unfortunately, this won't help. While high retention on your videos is a good indication of engagement, we are actually optimizing for how a video contributes to a longer viewing session on YouTube. So your video isn't more likely to be seen just because it's shorter."

    This confirms my theory xD

Dead on target with this observation AudioMacOSX - totally logical & true. And I would add the reason YouTube values quality content so much (vs. crapola) - it keeps the viewer engaged, increases the shares, embeds, etc., all of which adds up to more ad revenue, click throughs, etc. And that's also why the best insurance any video has for good ranking is to make the video watchable.

Not total minutes watched. It's average minutes watched per audience. This is how audience retention is defined.

Don't merely rely on YT stats. It sometimes gives you wrong perception if you are not aware :)
