This just came out today: hxxp://xxx.bitrebels.com/technology/new-study-reveals-2013-seo-ranking/

Better get the keywords out of your h1 tags as it's now a detriment to your ranking factors. Also keyword in title now has 0% effect.

On the other hand G+ links have a huge impact at 40% and Facebook shares at 34%.

    Interesting anyhow.

I just took a quick glance. I think you're reading the chart wrong. The data shows correlations of ranking factors relative to 2012, they are not absolute values.

Can't believe having keyword in H1 will be detrimental. That would be detrimental to googlers.

Not absolute but these are values they came up with after looking at thousands of keywords. Take a closer look and please tell me how I read it wrong. It showed a negative % for h1.

They just did a study on top ranking pages and what they had in common compared to lower ranking pages. I wouldn't call it a 'cracked' algorithm, just really good observations about what got those pages to the top of the rankings.

H1 has lost its importance? Gotta read the whole study.

Read the small print on the original site that the article is referencing. It mentions that it is a correlation of ranking factors relative to their data from 2012. -0.3 in this case means it has decreased in importance relative to 2012. Suggesting that it is now -.3 would mean you are readin it as an absolute value.

If the correlations hold up, it means Google is devaluing the 'paint by numbers' SEO approach to ranking sites that we're used to hearing, and replacing it with SMO (social media optimization), as it views the social interaction as more 'natural' or less subject to manipulation.

    Credibility: gone.

No change from previous year != it does absolutely nothing. You're completely misinterpreting the data.

Exactly! I've mentioned this twice already on this thread but no one seems to read these days.

If social interactions get to weigh in more about relevance of subjects you'll get nascar, big brother, rihana, bieber and #somehash as top results for anything. I seriously doubt they'd use social signals for anything other than current events or popularity contests. Or maybe that's what's wrong with search lately ;)

Dude... you are funny and at the same time exactly right!

I asked this question to John, who works with Google Switzerland in the Webmaster department. This is how the conversation went:

"So I see sites with no design elements, no sharing buttons with no social shares holding #1 spot on Google."

Example was a site that was written by a professor ranking on the top for some competitive keyword. His response was something along these lines:

"Only content is important. Social signals are just like links... some are valuable, some not."

I have new websites launched within the last 1-2 months with keywords in H1 tags. They're ranking just as well as they were last year.
