I've read a lot of books that are pre panda and some say my articles should be 500-800 words long but I have a friend that is doing SEO in the current world and he says it should be 1000+ words. So with all these new curve balls that google's throwing our way, what do you guys think is a good amount for word count in a unique niche based article blog website that is all white hat? (I'm new to SEO, this is a horrible time to come into this LOL) Thanks in advance.

In other words, in a post-panda, post-penguin world, what should the new rule of thumb be for word count in articles found on my own white hat domain that is only a month old...or is it the same? (I dont use blogger or anything, I have my own .com)

I think that longer articles that target 2 keywords with 4-6 LSI's and are arround 800-1200 words will work.

Theoretically the longer the article, the more informative it is, and the more number of LSI keywords you include the better.... although this doesn't mean your typical 500 word article won't help either.

If you have LSI keywords, your helping google understand what your site is about, and also increasing the number of keywords your ranking the site for (as opposed to a single or various few keywords).

I have sites which are ranking fine post penguin, and they don't have much in the way of high word count content on the pages.

I'm still using the traditional 500,750,900 and getting good results. The thing is to look natural not to have as many words as possible.

For a low comp keyword 300-500 word articles are fine with good backlinks, etc. It really just depends on competition. You have a top competitor with a 500 word article and no backlinks, do a 750-1000 word article with some relative backlinks.

I have had great luck with 400-500 and a couple pics in them when possible.

I think keyword and link density is something to watch out for, rather than the actual word count of the articles. A typical 400-500 word article with 5% keyword density and 3 links to the same site is really suspicious, for example. Repeating the same keyword phrase over and over again (H1, highlighting, underlining, in the URL and in the title and so on) is unnatural and easy to figure out with algorithms. So try to avoid overdoing it like that.

It depends on your competition. I've generally got around 600-800 word articles on my websites but there's no limit I strictly adhere to. For some niches, I've got only 400 words articles and they are doing fine.
