Yeah it needs way more publicity as I have tested it already with 2 of my eCommerce stores and the SSL is far better ranked then the other. I do zero SEO for SSL.

This is something that I have done with four of my product selling websites. Just for the user to feel more comfortable. It increases your sales once you are ranking for keywords and it just makes the visitor feel more safe when purchasing products.

I 100% agree with this not to mention that some versions of Firefox will display your name next to the link as a protected site and that in it self is a trust key for people.

@datmoney Read it, not impressed. Business is business whether Google dictates the rules or not. Common curtsey is protecting company assets and the number one asset should be your customers.

I agree. If you are not protecting your customers, then you are leaving yourself wide open for their information to be stolen. As a seller, the number one priority is your customer/visitor/client.

Interesting! Someone should make a case study about this.

It's pleasing to know secure sites will rank better than others from now on, but we are yet to find out how much difference it will make. Google said it's a lightweight factor, and I don't see it becoming a heavy ranking factor.

Yea pretty obvious it'll always be a lightweight factor, still if your competitor has sll and you've not, and the seo, user experience between your and your competitor sites equivals, then he's gonna rank #1 spot higher, and as nobody want this to happen, will run buy a ssl certificate.

Myself have bought ssl certificates for all my sites months ago, tough my sites are all 1k+ pages.

Well this is interesting. Though I agree, customers first and safety is a big concern for them so I do understand the logic behind this. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some certificates to buy..

But what's the purpose of ssl if you have a blog or a 4 page affiliate site? SSL is only helpful if you have an ecommerce site or anything which collects user information. I do know that they used to see that ECom sites with SSL will get better rankings but now doing it with all sites, just doesn't make sense.

Everyone and their dog will now jump on the SSL ship. I don't see it as a bigger ranking factor tbh. Just another one of those 100 factors which can't get your site ranked. Backlinks is still the way to go.

It's a good time to be selling SSL.

I wonder how much the big SSL companies paid Google

Hello business for the SSL sellers ;)

Personally I think this statement is overrated a bit. I don't think it's a 'must-have' to rank. The only way to see how much of a benefit the SSL actually gives is to create 2 brand new projects, similar structure like similar CMS, same backlinks etc. and then really compare the results to each other. Problem is though no site is same to the other, so the test would need to be done on quite a bigger scale.

I guess one of the bist indicators is to see if the usual spammy searches will be overtaken by sites with SSLs or not. If yes, that's a confirmation for me :)
