I am sorry if I go off the topic little bit, but I believe it is relevant.

Google is certainly expending horizons and undergoing big changes. MayDay, Caffeine, Instant, Places (aka Local), Google Phone Biz, TV, self driving cars and space exploration. Where will they stop?

One might argue that all those projects and changes are natural expansion, improvements and maturing but others will say it might be fear, almost panic.

I look at myself. Few years back when I was doing good money online it was because I found my niche and excelled at it. I was on top of the game. I felt invincible and, yes cocky.

Than after some time, new competition started popping up, market was changing, it was ever harder to keep up and stay on top. Then I realized I am not invincible. I explored other venues, few dozen other venues, in hopes to create back up plans and diversify. What happened was the opposite. I stretched myself too thin and ended up spending all the time and effort maintaining ventures that were doomed to fail as a single unit. Yet each individual venture by itself was very lucrative, if proper attention was devoted to it. By now I have learned many lessons and narrowed to 2 core B2B businesses (incorporated, licensed and all that) and few low maintenance websites.

I mention this because I can see similarities between me and G. And also because I feel there might be a danger for google. I refuse to use FeEbay since they jerked the fees up, I am using Hulu since I got fed up with annoying ads on YouTube, and many webmasters might just get fed up with all the changes (beta versions really) in Google?s search algorithm and move on to Bing/Yahoo and others.

In regards to new Google Places I can say it was expected to some degree. Anyone who has followed SEO recently should have noticed a shift towards localization and information sharing. There are other companies and networks like facebook, yelp, foursqueres that will continue to expend localization.

Ever since Google Local came out I added my core B2B business, submitted to yelp, yahoo local, Bing local, yellow pages (remember those) and couple other localized places. For me this change will not be dramatic as I have strong local presence and my other websites are in niches that are very hard to ?localize?.

The next step people might not see yet will be rankings by referrals and reviews. Mostly true for products and services, which is almost everything. We see it already on FaceBook in the way they present the ads. Based on ?friends? recommendations etc. on Amazon for long time ?people that bought this ? also throw their money on this? and many more examples.

Bottom line is to keep on top of things as much as possible, yet not throwing all the eggs in one basket.
The ones that do legit whitehat seo and have solid business model with real product and service will continue to thrive no matter what is thrown at them. The ones that look for short cuts, use shady, misleading and spamming techniques will not be there tomorrow.

there is also good survey from some seo guys in regards to best practices for local ranking.

I believe this new change is horrible for a SEOer whose strategy is to dominate a niche/keyword with many sites on the first page... It will make it harder to get clients by using this method. I'll have to find a new way I guess.

    How?

in order to get a place in the local terms, your website has to be a offline business aswell. So you need to rent a store or something to use as an address!

But out of curiosity how much can you do it for?

    Amuse me:rolleyes:
