Anyone else noticing this? I thought I had dropped in rank but it turns out the number one spot is just an ad.

The ads barely look any different than normal search results...it's a lot harder to tell IMO, especially if there is only one ad.

Makes me wonder if people are going to start naturally skipping the #1 spot for fear that it's an ad...

Same here. It's barely distinguishable. The background is a tad bit shade of yellow. I had to second guess what was #1.

yeah the only thing to distinguish it is the background color of the ads. How easy it is to tell it's an ad is dependent on how well peoples monitors are adjusted for brightness and contrast.

I have three monitors that are all adjusted slightly different. I just moved a browser window around that had a google results page. On my main monitor it's very obvious that it's an ad block, on another one the background is less noticeable and it's not as obvious. On my third monitor though the yellow background is totally washed away, the ads look exactly as if they were part of the search results. I'm sure for a lot of people this will cause a lot of confusion.

Google needs to watch out about what it's doing. Just cause they're number one right now doesn't mean that can't change. If people start thinking the search results are just paid for ads it won't take long before people start going back to yahoo or trying bing or some other new se. Google can get away with a lot, but people are fickle. Searchers prefer to use google because they feel it gives the best most relevant results. Screw with peoples trust in the results pages and google could be in for a big surprise.

...the average user has no clue, if you look nowadays anything local you are not even on the screen of my 22 inch monitor, you have to scroll down to get to the Nr.1 organic spot. for personal research i only use the minimalistic version of google, its fast and clean, almost like the old days... http://www.google.com/pda

Yeah, it really sucks. Just looking at a page of mine that's still at #9 for a 600-a-day search, it literally gets 2 or 3 clicks a day for that keyword, where you would expect at least 25. The page is just so jam-packed with ads. So much for "user experience". I hope it's just testing they are doing, seems a risky practice on G's part.

Indeed... Google started using this trick along time ago. Every ad showed above organic listing looks like an organic one.

    Nice trick...

But... this also means the real #1 organic site will get the traffic that the 4th traffic usually got.

Another way to spot Ads is the 35 character of text which they need to maintain, organic results below are more text rich

@GreyWolf, I totally agree.. Apparently Google is a hypocrisy with their motto "Don't Be Evil" I have a similar setup with a laptop on the side and I can't even distinguish the ads on the Laptop. Very misleading.

Altho most of my traffic comes from google, if I am every searching for something personally, I use Bing.

"Don't Be Evil" is just a joke for the fools of the world

Not seeing any of these in the UK yet other than the usual top3 adwords slots and the 5 or 6 down the right side.

Anyone got a query I can chuck into .com which will throw one up?

It was a great move on G's adjustments! Making you get more clicks that people didn't mean to click on. Double edge sword from all angles IMO.

This practice of making the links the same color as the background is outside Google's own TOS.

Not really they are still easily distinguishable. You can say that the space between the two has reduced somewhat but apart from that there is nothing much.

I think they should just stick with ads on the side.
