I have heard (and experienced) that a domain that is aged a bit ranks faster for your keywords than a new domain. How about a domain that has expired (loses its age) but has powerful backlinks to it? As its age has been reset will it rank as slowly as a new domain or not? What is does your experience say?

They rank pretty fast with a solid backlink profile, definitely worth it.

So when I buy a deleted or expired domain (maybe luckily with a PR 1,2 or 3) it will rank much faster?
So far I only bought brand new domains. I really want to give expired or deleted ones a try.

Is there anything to take care of? Like if the domain is penalized?

Check the domain in the archive.org to see what was on it before and then check some backlink checking service (ahrefs, majestic etc) if the anchors are natural.

You definitely have to find out whether it has been penalised before by ascertaining what kind of content was hosted on it before it expired and whether it shows up when you search for its name in Google.

If you go for a decent domain with existing backlinks, you would obviously benefit from quicker rankings.

If you build a site that is still relevant to the backlinks the domain has then you will probably see ranking benefits, but if you repurpose the domain to a different niche then you might find that the ranking impact is less.

    This is based on experience.

I guess by now you have received a lot of PM's from people who want to "help" or sell you their service for expired domains. However, make sure to find someone with reputation here on BHW, there is so much crap sold that you need to be careful.

As already told here, you will need to use tools like ahref, majestic etc. to check the domains, both backlink profile and other things. Don't get fooled into any deal where people try to sell you over expensive expired domains. search here on BHW and you will ding a lot of good sellers and deals.

As long as you make sure the domain hasnt been abused, it will help you rank faster. I've noticed just putitng up the old content gets it ranking for the old keywords it was ranking before (even if just the brand name or small volume words), and is instantly trusted more.

this is sound advice if only for a short while before putting your own content up. Preserving / redirecting existing internal links once your new content is up can also be a boon.

Without a doubt aged/expired domains rank quicker. There are quite a few things that you must take into account before acquiring a expired domain. Have a look at the link profile and see if the links look legitimate, have a look at the anchor text etc. The most important is having a look at the domain in way back machine/archive and see what the site was previously used for. Best of luck!

Expired domain every time. I can just hit the already active aged backlinks as tier 2.

Aged domains (5+ years preferably) that have been used immediately upon acquiring it, makes a difference. I notice
the difference myself thinking a 2006 domain just being parked without use would be 9 years or so now..oh no it is not.
Like many have said, look at the link history for a better conclusion mate.

Hey Julia, I've been using "Open Site Explorer" to see how dodgy the site has been. Others use Ahrfs faithfully and other tools, so "Moz" OSE
all the way on my end..good trial as well.
