The message 'your battery is reaching the end of its usable life. It is suggested you purchase a new one' appeared on my Inspiron 1501 laptop. I know that the best thing to do would be to buy a new battery, but they are around £100 from Dell. If I always keep my laptop plugged in- I rarely use it outside or as a portable machine etc, do I need to buy a new battery? Or is the battery essential plugged in with the AC adaptor or not?

have you always used the laptop while it is plugged because it reduces the battery life drastically.
also from much time are you using this battery(sorry am not aware of dell asumes as battery life).
also is it 6 cell or 9 cell.

First of change that damn text color! We're in front of the computer screen all day, our eyes can't take any more torture.

Secondly if you don't want to spend $150 on a new battery then get one on ebay for $30-35. They are not genuine but made from a third party however it won't show you this message and it will get the job done.

Regarding you battery I had a similar problem, the way to make your battery live longer is to not keep it charging all the time. When you're using the AC adapter take the battery off and leave it in a cool and dark place. Use the battery only when you are not using the ac adapter and also put it in once in a while so it doesn't die in storage.
