So I was checking out my competition for a keyword I'm currently trying to rank for and came across a new blog that only has 4 posts (1 of them being the hello world post that the blog starts with), a very simple wordpress layout and hardly any keyword usage. The site is PR2, it shows he has 110 backlinks and the site was registered march 2009, but his first post was mid June.

I can understand if this site may rank for a long tail keyword, but this is a 1-word keyword that gets over 800k exact searches globally and 165k exact searches locally per month. As well as over 5 million broad searches a month. Hes on the first page... How can this be?

Edit: BTW, out of the 3 posts he actually made, 1 of them is just a link to a video with no text, the other two have very few words in the post.

Did you check to see where the backlinks are coming from? I would imagine that if he had 110 pr3+ backlinks and the competition does not have as many as he does, this is possible.

Just a thought. I do believe and have always believed that backlinks carry a lot of weight.

He's been ranked for at least a week or two in that position that I've known.

I'm going through his list of backlinks (using some for my site of course :D), some seem to be PR3+, others seem to have no rank. He also submitted a few articles to directories and created a few youtube accounts and uploaded a video and left it with his url. Quite a few links are also coming from one forum thats ranked PR3 (plus its #1 in google for that keyword).

So I guess hes doing it all with just quality backlinks, never thought you could have such little content and still rank like this. Now if only the guy monetized his site...

Edit: I also noticed he had his url in some one pages sales sites, I'm assuming he paid the ownsers to embed his link in the description. I checked the whois on the domains and they are completely different people and dates registered.

Offer to purchase the site from him? Just a suggestion. He could also be using it to build up the pr on that site and use it for a backlink to another site?

Is there a way to make money with it?

If there is, offer him assistance or consulting, because you know of a way he could be making $x,xxx.xx amount of money per day?

Just an idea. Always thinking of new ways to make money.

Ah found the answer to why he made the site. Noticed one of his posts was giving a good review on a related product for 47 euro, checked out the sales page of that site and its registered to the same person. So hes building sites and then advertising his sales site on it.

He must be making some pretty decent money, but with only 110 backlinks I think I can pass him up within two months or so. He seems to have stopped creating backlinks and updating the site.

if it will make you money... duplicate what he's done then 1 up him and crush him.

google's not looking for on-page and off-page perfection. they're just looking for you to give them more than your competitor(s).

Yea thats what I'm planning to do, I'm just afraid to start doing a huge amount of directory submissions and links like this while the sites still new. I think I'll start with maybe 50 backlinks a week max, then slowly go up from there.

I checked some of my bigger competition and noticed one site has all of his backlinks from tumblr profiles, people linking to him. Thousands of links. Another thing I found was in MNF my keyword's SOC is currently 959,000 - I have a bit of work ahead of me these next few months.

I agree. In Google's eyes, natural backlinking follows a trend of a few at first and builds up over time. I prepare my clients for a 3 to 6 month growth cycle if they want permanent Google love.

Well shit it's good to know that i'm not the only one seeing shit sites being ranked well by google.

Google definitely changed something, becuase they don't seem to give a rat's ass about how much content you have, or if it is duplicate... at least i keep seeing sites rank which are blatantly shitty.
