    Well hello there!

    Welcome to my journey.

Take a look around, just try not to break anything ... because that is what I'm here for ... to break as much as possible.

    WHAT'S THIS JOURNEY ALL ABOUT:

Like most of us here at BHW, we have hundreds of ideas popping in and out of our heads on a daily basis. Some good. Some bad. Some WTF!

And there is nothing wrong with that ... except the constant idea flow can become distracting if not reined in.

For me, the easiest and most powerful way to rein in these distractions is to find a way to hold yourself accountable.

    Thus enter this BHW journey.

My Journey will be launching a business/marketing/advertising blog from scratch.

I will be registering a brand new domain (already done), designing the theme from hand, and building the audience using methods found here at BHW and various other outlets.

I will be documenting what works and what doesn't. Taking in any suggestions the knowledgeable BHW has to offer and also answering any questions you might have.

    INITIAL GOALS:

    • Post 3 blog posts per week consistently for 7 weeks.
    • Average 500 unique visitors per day for 7 days.
    • Earn $7.00 in a single day.

I wanted to start with simple goals and then as I achieve one, I'll replace it with another, more challenging goal.

WHEN WILL I BE UPDATING THIS JOURNEY?

This seems to be the million-dollar question with any journey.

I'll admit it. I launched a previous journey and then just stopped updating it.

    Why?

Because I didn't set any goals for the BHW Journey post itself.

    GOALS FOR MY JOURNEY POST:

    • Update twice a week (Monday and Friday/Saturday).
    • Give updated numbers during each update including post numbers, traffic and any revenue.
    • Answer all questions posted by the BHW community.
    • Be as open about the development and progress as possible.

Okay, that last one sounded a little cheesy, but you know what I mean.

SO WHEN DOES THIS JOURNEY START?

Today ... and my first update will come this Friday.

Okay ... you can now go back to your regularly scheduled BHW reading.

    UPDATE #1

Welcome to the first update of my time to "Shut Up and Hustle" journey.

    DEVELOPMENT

I spent the first part of this week researching other high performing business blogs. One of the best sources in my mind is Flippa. Granted there are a lot of exaggerated numbers in the sales posts, when researching I only look at the ones with both "Verified Analytics" and "Verified AdSense" information.

Being able to get some first-hand numbers really allows me some of early UX/UI research.

I can go into further detail about my process here, but for this post I can tell you I came up with a layout that combined 2-3 different layouts that seemed to be providing both high revenue and high engagement with visitors.

Next up with finishing up the HTML / CSS and putting it into WordPress. Goal is to have that done no later than tomorrow evening.

    POST WRITING

Woot! This is where I'm really proud of myself.

I've launched many (unsuccessful) blogs in the past and come to the conclusion that the main reason was lack of blog posts.

Wait, what? Are you serious? Why wouldn't people want to come and visit a rarely updated blog?

It was really lack of blog posts + not having a thought out posting calendar.

This time around I have already finished 3 blog posts and have 2 more in outline form.

I've also created a rough draft of September's posting calendar that will be filling up really fast.

    NEXT STEPS

    - Finish HTML / CSS / WordPress Integration
    - Write 2-3 blog post outlines
    - Finish the 2 blog post outlines
    - Launch blog no later than Tuesday (September 1st)

    UPDATE #2:

I'm 99.9999% sure that I will be launching tomorrow (ON TIME!) which is always a great way to start a journey.

    LAYOUT / DESIGN

I spent the majority of the weekend finishing up the HTML / CSS and integrating that into WordPress. After spending the last 5+ years building WordPress website for clients, I've really streamlined this process. I use the theme Starkers which is basically a blank WordPress theme, and then add in some of the default WP classes. Then I throw my Bootstrap-powered CSS / JS into it and I have my customized responsive website layout.

I don't plan on having any ads on the website for the first 30 days. This has always been a challenge for me because I want to make money right out of the gate, but for a blog with zero readers, I need to get some visitors before optimizing it for ads. Once I get to day 31 I'll start with AdSense and sprinkle in some affiliate links and see how everything performs.

    CONTENT CREATION

Even though I didn't plan on writing any content this weekend, I came across some great content that I couldn't pass up. So right now I have a total of 5 posts in the queue which should give the first 1.5 weeks of content. I really want to get that number up to 3 weeks of content in the queue, but I know that will take time.

Along the same lines as the queue, I'm going to start creating some evergreen-ish content. Basically I want to have 15-20 blog posts ready just in case their is something breaking / trending in that niche.

Example: Last night Kanye West said he wanted to run for President of the United States in 2020. Good chance he was just rambling, but it was trending all over the web last night and today in the US. So if I had an article that had any mention / tie-in with Kanye, I would want to get it on the website ASAP and start promoting it to take advantage of his increase exposure.

WHAT'S UP FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK?

    Good question.

Once the website launches tomorrow (fingers crossed) I'm going to split my time 80/20 with 80% spent on content creation and 20% spent on optimization ... and 0% on any sort of marketing of the blog. I plan on having the same 30 day rule for marketing as I do with adding ads to the website. No need to send someone to a blog with under 10 posts on it.

Also starting with Friday's update I will post traffic numbers for the website and work on breaking the numbers out as much as possible in the update. I know these aren't as sexy as the revenue numbers, but you have to visitors before you can earn any cash money.

Like always, if you have any questions don't hesitate to post a reply in this thread.

ANOTHER QUICK UPDATE: The website went live with its first post yesterday morning and I just checked and the website is already ranked in Google. I haven't promoted it nor submitted it to any directories or search engines. Only Google part of the website is analytics.

Hadn't realized how fast Google was lately with indexing new blogs. Under 24 hours. Impressive.

    UPDATE #3:

Yay! As you know from my mini-update, the blog launched on time!

Even more amazing is that it took Google less than 24 hours to index the homepage of the blog. Granted the page disappeared the next day, but it came back.

So far there have been two posts published and both got indexed yesterday (Thursday). One was posted Tuesday, one was posted Thursday.

I also added the website to my Google Webmaster tools so I can get a better understanding of it's search presence. Nothing to report here since it's brand new, but will be sharing as much of this as I can with you.

    A LITTLE BIT OF TRAFFIC

Yesterday was a pretty good day for the blogs thanks to a podcaster I listen to on an almost daily basis. I gave his team a shoutout in a post and he ended up RT'ing it out to his 36k followers. No major traffic numbers, but made for an exciting Thursday.

    POSTS on POSTS on POSTS

At launch I had three posts in the queue waiting to be published and a few more in the draft and/or outline stages. As of writing this update the third post has gone live.

It will take me a little bit to find my "voice" for the blog, but I'm happy that these first posts flowed pretty well.

Have some interesting post ideas for when I hit the 30+ day mark which hopefully will drive some traffic. Waiting to wait at least a month before working on traffic-driving content.

    EMAIL LIST

Since this is BHW, I don't need to get into the importance of having some sort of email capture on your website.

Working on finishing up my email list setup. Going with the easiest setup first (MailChimp) and using a plugin that will slide in the sign-up form once you get a certain percentage into a post.

Normally I have this ready to rock and roll when I launch the website, but I was debating between MailChimp and another service which slowed down my development.

    INITIAL GOALS STATUS:

    • Post 3 blog posts per week consistently for 7 weeks. (1 Week Complete!)
    • Average 500 unique visitors per day for 7 days. (Not even close this week)
    • Earn $7.00 in a single day. (No revenue to report)

WHAT'S THE PLAN FOR THE WEEKEND

My next BHW update will come on Monday. Over the next 4 days I plan on researching on outlining another 6-8 posts which would give me around 12 "I need to finish" posts. Those 12 posts would be close to a month's worth of content.

I really want to stay ahead of the game when it comes to content so if something unexpected comes up I'll be covered. The one thing you don't want to do is start slacking on posting otherwise your blog will get stale and you'll start losing a lot of visitors.

    UPDATE #4:

Happy early first week birthday to my blog. I'm posting this on Sunday night instead of Monday since I'll be traveling all day tomorrow.

    TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC AND MORE TRAFFIC

Since we opened our doors on 9/1 we have had 32 visits (look out ViralNova! :)). Of that, 44% came via social, 28% direct and 19% organic search.

All we have done so far is post. Zero promotion / marketing of the blog at all, however managed to get some Twitter and Google+ mentions from two of the blog posts that resulted in the social traffic.

While researching the small portion of search traffic, I can confirm what most of BHW has been saying for a while ... alt text is important and Google does us it for ranking in some sense.

Example: I noticed that I was getting a few visits from a specific keyword so I went to Google and type it in. I skimmed the page and found my entry and the keywords I entered actually were in the alt text for an image on the page. Google even bolded those keywords in the alt text that do not appear anywhere else in the body.

Although it's almost second nature for me to include proper keywords / keyphrases in the alt text for images, I'm adding that to be post-publishing checklist.

Basically I'm creating a 10-point checklist that needs to be completed prior to scheduling a new post. Once I complete it and give it a few tests, I'll share it in this thread.

WHEN WILL WEEKLY TRAFFIC / REVENUE STATS BE POSTED?

The plan is to start this upcoming Friday by posting the previous 7 days of traffic. After the first 30 days of being live, I'll start adding in revenue generators and those will be reported as well.

Every Monday I'll give an update on how the traffic went over the weekend (Friday thru Sunday).

WHAT DO I HAVE PLANNED THIS WEEK?

Right now I only have one blog post scheduled this week meaning I need to FOCUS and finish at least two more posts so that I can continue with the minimum of three posts per week goal.

I already mentioned that I'm finishing up the 10-point blog post checklist which will become really handy when I'm filling out the upcoming month's publishing calendar ... which I also need to finish.

Tuesday I'm going to setup a Facebook fan page for the blog. I'm going to try a 85/15 ratio for what is shared on the page ... 85% non-blog shares, 15% sharing my blog posts.

Going to forgo a Twitter account right now. Nothing against Twitter but want to focus my attention on building my Facebook audience first before moving on to Twitter.

I'll have a more detailed blog come Friday, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reply back to this thread.

    Thanks!

Good luck with the blog! And thanks for the tip on alt text. I've had my own, legit blog running for awhile, and it's heavily image-based, but I have no alt text at all! Will definitely have to add that as something to edit in my own blogging checklist. Still, it's pretty cool that you're getting some social shares despite zero promotion. Must be a very, very good blog you're working on :D

Next update not planned until Friday.

The update schedule for this journey is two times per week (Monday and Friday).
