ok call me an idiot. please. I deserve it. I am an idiot.

so here is what happened: If you guys remember from a while ago, I have a lawyer website that is ranking for a few keywords in google. I was planning to either sell or rent this site to a lawyer. so I emailed a bunch of lawyers about it and not a single one got back to me.

so finally, through a friend of a friend, I found a lawyer that was interested in the site. as a matter of fact, he told me he had visited the website a long time ago and wondered who owns it. he was glad to meet me and wanted to make a deal. so far so good.

I went to his office today. he told me he would pay me a small monthly fee to maintain the site, and he will also pay me for every lead. "don't tell anyone though, paying for leads is against the rules and I could get in trouble"
BUT! when I am nervous, I tend to joke around. so I said "I am going to report you to the bar. hehehe"

so he started explaining how it's not illegal the way he does it, because blah blah blah. Then his personality completely changed and basically, he kicked me out. nicely though. but I am pretty sure he won't be working with me. And I can understand that. I wouldn't work with an asshole like myself either.

Now, the thing is, I would never tell on anyone. I am not a little bitch. my cousin told me 4 years ago that he smokes but he didn't want his parents to know. I have kept this secret for 4 years. I know how to keep my mouth shut.

do you guys know of any way that I could undo the damage? everything i can think of is likely to make things worse. so I dont know what to do.

I think the title should be changed to: don't make tasteless jokes in a business meeting.

The best jokes when doing business are the ones the client makes.

It's called being socially adept, you're not. Haha. Lesson learned, try have a little more intuition next time. Don't be afraid to muck around, this guy obviously wasn't the joking type, and you didn't have enough rapport to say such a thing yet.

It isn't your fault, it's his completely. He got a tinge of guilt. Why?

Professional Professions(I just wanted to write that) like Medicine, Law, and...whatever I'm missing, have a pretty strict rule that advertisement is uncouth for their level of professional professionalism. If his colleagues caught wind, he wouldn't care that he was disbarred, he'd be freaking out that his buddies "won." And thus are the pretensions and worries of the fortunate.

It dawned on him that his reputation as a lawyer wasn't good enough to get clients on his own, or maybe that that his chosen law field is insanely competitive and he doesn't know what to do, maybe he was thinking about how many people he protected(or let a slip of the tongue go to the wrong people and got someone in serious trouble), or a slew of other horrific thoughts of self-loathing.

He was not upset at you.

You can go back and try to apologize now that you understand. It is not beneath you to admit ignorance, I've had to in circumstances, and I did not look handsome at the moment(inb4 or ever).

You can offer to deliver a service unrelated to lead generation. Perhaps reviews of his service, or a local seo type deal for his office? This is still kind of not "cool" in certain professions, but then how the hell do doctors' offices get listed on google maps, right? right.

Being witty and humorous with clients/suppliers/partners is a great way to bond and relax the atmosphere. However it is an art, and you have to master it...

You made my day, that's the most retarded thing I've heard.

Jokes are ok. You just have to know when to use them (the right joke at the right time). On the other hand, unless you had your poker face on when you made the joke, he was just a little too paranoid. Really the joke was not that bad. He probably knew it, but he just wanted to be a cocky little prick (probably over compensating for the lack there of) :D

go to him again and he would want a price cut. Just try and find another lawyer who might be interested, and be professional with him :)

Maybe another way to look at it is in business experience tells one it is always best to secure the order and/or see some green $$$$ before joking around...

    Why is that?

Ask the OP he feels the pain...

Old hands and experienced traders employ more astute and balanced sales and closing techniques, where they close deal...

I don't think I'd go back to him - just put it down to experience.

You are not an idiot, you are just human and possibly made a mistake. Or maybe it wasn't a mistake - perhaps a better deal is just round the corner. Or use that site as a showcase site and contact pros in other less sensitive niches, showing the lawyer site as an example of what you can do.

Are You an Idiot? An idiot, dolt, or dullard is a mentally deficient person, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way.
    Or a Rat?
