If you don't subscribe to a shit load of email lists in your niche you are missing the boat. They are great ways to find out what works and they also spark new ideas. Subscribe to lists that belong to people and companies that you know are making money. They are obviously doing something right.

    Neil Patel.

Some people (mostly experienced SEOs) think he spits out garbage targeting noobs and some people (mostly noobs new to SEO) think he is great. Love him or hate him, he does things that EVERYONE can learn from.

This isn't a discussion about him, so keep that crap out of the thread.

I want to discuss two emails that I received from him that prove one point: building a large targeted list is money in the bank. With a little creativity you can make piles of money from a single email sequence.

He sent out a survey prior asking what people wanted to learn about. This 2 part email sequence came after...

Let's look at the FIRST email I received:

    Email subject line:

Special Announcement (time sensitive) [short and sweet and the "time sensitive" creates a sense of urgency]

    Email body:

    Hey netmoney1,

I’ve got a crazy announcement to make today... [crazy? ahh, now I want to know more...I wonder how crazy this announcement can be?]

A couple of weeks ago I sent out a survey asking what you wanted to learn most. [good job reminding the subscriber why they are receiving this email]

Well, the results are in and the most voted topic by far is...

SEO Tactics to Increase Website Traffic! It won 31% of the votes which was almost double the second most voted topic - Increasing Sales Conversions (16% of votes). [I would bet this was going to be the winner regardless...after all, he has a product to sell...and this is all well planned in advance. Notice the emphasis he puts on this topic by stating that it received double the votes that the second place topic received. This gives instant credibility to this topic, making the reader think that it must be something that they need to learn more about]

After seeing the huge demand to learn SEO strategies, I've decided to do something crazy... [crazy?...what could it be?]

I’m doing a one-time only, online workshop where I’m going to teach you my 7 most advanced SEO hacks. [one time only...makes the reader take notice...they don't want to miss out on this...]

These are the strategies I usually only share with my private clients. They will easily double your traffic and they are completely white hat techniques. [the carrot is being dangled slowly in front of the reader....SEO hacks that are usually only given to private clients? Ohhh, the reader starts to feel like they are going to receive something top secret]

Here’s the best part though: [this is why you are going to say YES to the offer]

If you act fast, I’m going to let you learn all of them for just $1. [top secret SEO hacks for just $1? Must be the readers lucky day...]

I’ll explain the deal in just a moment but first let me tell you about these SEO Hacks: [Time to give the reader a virtual boner...]

I personally used these SEO hacks to grow the Quicksprout website to over 1 million monthly visitors and my brand new personal blog to 220k monthly visitors in just 12 months. [Drops these stats to command instant street cred]

When I taught my buddy Mike these hacks for our NutritionSecrets experiment, he was able to get the blog to over 200k monthly visitors in just 9 months! [another stat to make the readers pants tight...200K monthly visitors in just 9 months? Half the readers just creamed their pants reading this]

I also implemented to rank both Quicksprout and my personal Neil Patel blog in the number 1 spot for highly competitive search terms like “Online Marketing”. [Wow, if these secrets helped rank this keyword then they will SURLEY get me ranked #1]

On this workshop, I’m going to show you how to do the same, step-by-step.

    When Is The Workshop?

The online workshop is on Thursday 26th May and will be streamed live at 9:00 PDT, 12:00 EDT, 17:00 GMT. [Stresses the one time only deal...creates a sense of urgency]

You will also receive a full recording of the workshop if you can’t make it live so you can learn the SEO hacks in your own time. [He knows most subscribers probably can't make the "live" webinar (I would bet it's already recorded) so this eliminates that excuse...now there is no excuses...because it will be sent to you...so now the offer STILL applies to 100% of the people still reading the email down this far]

How Much Does The Online Workshop Cost?

I’m pricing this workshop at a really low price of just $47 because I want to help the smaller sites.
However, to make it completely risk-free for you to attend, you can register your seat now for just $1. [Very low price at $47...but the $1 offer keeps everyones attention....it's just a buck to register to get suuuuper top secret SEO hacks]

That means you pay just $1 now to reserve your spot on the workshop, attend and learn the 7 SEO Hacks from me directly. [Again stressing it's just a dollar to save your spot...]

Then, if you loved the workshop, you’ll automatically be billed the remaining $46 three days after the workshop. [you will only pay the remaining $46 if you love the info...but don't worry, you don't need to do anything because it will be auto billed]

This means you have 3 days to try out the strategies for yourself and decide if the workshop was worth it or not. [no risk...take the top secret hacks for a 3 day test drive]

If you don’t feel it was worth the crazy low price of $47 for any reason, simply email me and you won’t get billed. [again, zero risk...if you don't like it you don't pay...]

Think of it like dining at a great restaurant. If you don’t like it, you don’t pay. [ummm, not sure where he is eating...but whatever]

What’s The Catch? [because anyone with a brain knows there is a catch]

The catch is I’m only letting 1600 people attend this online workshop. The reason I’m only charging just $47 for the workshop is because I want to help those that don’t have big marketing budgets. [I would bet if 5,000 people wanted to register they are all getting in...the webinar software I'm sure will be set to 1,600...but come on...nobody is going to turn away paying customers...that will never happen...then he justifies the low price....he just wants to help...nice guy]

However, with SEO, only one site can rank in the number 1 spot for a search term. If too many people learn these advanced SEO hacks, they’ll lose their effectiveness. [setting the reader up for why this is 'limited' seating...]

For that reason, I have to limit the number of attendees to just 1600 people. [only 1,600...get your credit card out...you don't want to miss out and be left out in the dark while your competition outranks your ass]

"How Do I Make Sure I’m One Of The 1600 Who Learns The 7 Advanced SEO Hacks?" [tell me nooowwwwww....I need this]

To get a sneak peak at what you’ll learn on this workshop and register your seat for just $1, click the link below:

Click here to get all the details and grab your spot for $1 [CTA #1 - click it and grab your spot]

    See you on the workshop!

    Neil

P.S. Once you double your traffic with the SEO hacks I’m teaching on the workshop, will you send me a testimonial? It’s one of the reasons I’m charging so little for this workshop. I want to prove that my strategies work for smaller sites too :) [just a little reminder that you are going to double your traffic...this is designed to catch the people that skipped over the first CTA link and kept reading down]

Register For The 7 Advanced SEO Hacks Workshop Here [final CTA designed to get those that just got a boner learning they are going to double their traffic]

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's look at the SECOND email I received:

    Email subject line:

I did not expect this... [Didn't expect what? I need to click this NOW and find out...]

    Email body:

    Wow.

On Tuesday I announced that I’m doing a one-time only online workshop where I’m going to teach my best, most advanced SEO hacks. [reminder of why you got this...]

It’s only been 48 hours since I announced it and there’s only 328 spaces left!
I have to limit the numbers on this one because the strategies I’m teaching on this workshop are usually reserved for my private clients. [so, if you haven't already signed up...you better act NOW because there are just 328 spots left...I bet this email caused WAY more than 328 new sign ups ;)]

As it’s SEO, if everyone started using these advanced SEO hacks, they’d lose their effectiveness so I’m only doing this workshop once. [more stressing the 'limited' factor]

To make sure you don’t miss out, reserve your spot for just $1 here [first CTA is right up top, right after announcing there is only 328 spaces left...jackpot]

The online workshop takes place on Thursday 26th May at 9:00 PDT, 12:00 EDT, 17:00 GMT.
You’ll also receive a recording if you can’t attend the live webinar. [more stressing that even if you can't make the 'live' webinar you can still grab a space]

I’ll be teaching you the 7 advanced SEO hacks I used to grow Quicksprout to over 1 million monthly visitors, my personal blog to 220K monthly visitors in just 12 months AND a brand new nutrition blog to over 200K monthly visitors in less than 9 months. [more stats to cause internet boners]

Here’s a sneak peak of what you’ll learn on this workshop: [ohhhh...a sneak peek...but he calls it a peak...don;t make stupid grammar mistakes...it will push away intelligent readers...who knows, maybe this was intentional...like the 'Nigerian Prince' emails...they purposely make them so bad and obvious...because if anyone actually replies to them they know they have a certified sucker on the other end]

SEO Hack #1: Hijack Traffic From The No. 1 Spot
    - I’m going to show you the 2 simple tactics I use that will have people clicking on your website in the search results instead of your competition’s, even if you aren’t in the number 1 spot yet.

SEO Hack #2: Dominate The Most Competitive Terms
    - I’ll reveal how I rank my sites in the number 1 spot for the highest searched keywords, beating sites with more domain authority. This is how I got Quicksprout to rank in the number 1 spot for the highly competitive search term “Online Marketing”.

SEO Hack #3: Get Links From Every Major Publication
    - I’ll show you my personal strategy for getting high authority sites like Forbes, Entrepreneur and Inc to link to my sites. This sends thousands of visitors to my sites every month and gives me an unfair advantage in the search results because of the high domain authority links.

SEO Hack #4: Achieve The Perfect Site Architecture
    - I’m going to demonstrate the perfect internal link structure for your site. This is the one area most sites completely mess up. By getting it right, I’ve been able to get thousands of my pages to completely dominate the search results and I’m going to show you how to do the same.

    SEO Hack #5: International Expansion
    - Most websites only target english speaking countries. However, you can skyrocket your revenue by intelligently targeting specific non-english speaking countries that have little to no competition in the search results.

You’ll learn how to identify the most profitable non-english speaking countries for your keywords so that you don’t waste any time translating for countries that won’t increase your revenue.

SEO Hack #6: Social Media Influence
    - Last year I decided to take Social Media more seriously. I was able to rapidly grow my twitter following to 200K, get 180K facebook fans and they both send 70,000 visitors to my sites every month. I’m going to show you exactly how I did it.

    SEO Hack #7: Mystery Hack
    - This last SEO hack I’m keeping a surprise for the workshop but it’s been responsible for exploding my personal brand over the past year. If you want to quickly increase the fame of your personal brand or company, you’ll want to use this hack.

[the hacks are all pretty basic...when you really break down all that text above there is nothing new or special....just hype]

    LIVE Q&A With Me
    - There will also be a live, extended Q&A with me at the end of the workshop. This is your chance to ask me anything about SEO or business and have me answer you directly. [a little extra bonus...]

The price of the workshop is just $47. However, you can reserve one of the last 328 spots right now for just $1. [Again...it's just a buck...so what do you have to lose?]

    Here’s how it works:
You pay just $1 now to reserve your spot on the workshop, attend and learn the 7 Advanced SEO Hacks from me directly. [ohhhh, so simple even an idiot could register and give their dollar]

Then, if you loved the workshop, you’ll automatically be billed the remaining $46 on Sunday May 29th.

This means you have 3 days to try out the strategies for yourself and decide if the workshop was worth it or not.

If you don’t feel it was worth the crazy low price of $47 for any reason, simply email me and you won’t get billed. I'll even refund the $1. [you even get your 100 pennies back....no risk]

I want to make this as risk-free as possible for you to attend. [wow, nice guy!]

Grab your seat to my 7 Advanced SEO Hacks Workshop for just $1 here [Final CTA]

    See you on the workshop!

    Neil

    THOUGHTS....

I doubt it will only be limited to 1,600. That would be crazy. He can say it is, but I would imagine anyone with a valid credit card will be allowed to get in on this action....

Let's just play with some numbers just to HAMMER down the point of this...you can make serious money with a huge list...

Imagine 3,000 people registered for this...each paying their $1 for a seat.

After, 2,000 demand their dollar back. That leaves 1,000 that will get auto billed.

That brings in $47,000. From a webinar that could be recorded in a day....and 3 emails that would be written and tossed into an autoresponder program that same day. Literally a days worth of work can generate nearly $50,0000.

    Now...go build your freaking lists!

Awesome analysis! Bookmarking this for later.

I enjoyed your analysis, there has to be at least a dozen subtle sales-increasing techniques in Patel's e-Mail. This makes it something great to reference later on. If someone can incorporate all the techniques he used to increase his sales into their own niche, they'd be grand.

I usually don't subscribe to other marketer's lists, but that's definitely an interesting tactic to take.

Not only was your breakdown spot on, but it is a great example of the power of a list.

    Added to pocket, thanks.

Exactly. I'm subscribed to email lists of my niche and see how they do it. Even though I do a little bit of email marketing, I watch how others do their copywriting.

    Great post

@radiant13 Entire different game. Plenty of info on this forum...use the search function.

@BuildMoreLinks Yup, his copywriting sucks noobs in...he's great at what he does.

@Floopa75 Ahhhh, you let the magic formula out. This gave me a good laugh...thanks!

@javabro Yeah, Brian is another one you should subscribe to...lots of ideas can be found by reading what they are putting out there.

@Sombrero You nailed it. High quality blog = more subscribers. They aren't going to just join for nothing...have to give them some value.

@Noah Hawryshko I agree...lots of good info can be pulled from these two simple emails

    @Skyebug77 Track him down ;)

    @Tazdingo Very welcome

@royserpa Agreed. I should have signed up for the webinar...not sure if I would have been one of the first 1,600 though. I probably would have missed out :p

@faithjhung Thank you. Copywriting is everything. You could have a million subscribers but if your copy sucks you have nothing.

What I have learned is that hot air is quick to grab attention and make money than actually providing results. I learned to use hot air first before I understood REAL psychology. Amazon, Apple, big advertising and marketing firms worth million use psychology correctly. Niel sounds like a blow fish taking a shit on 2 sharks doing it. The hot air is nice but really it looks, reads, and feels scammy.

You need a sense of when to use what is natural sales psychology. I use natural or deceptively natural ways to trigger a buying emotion and overcome doubt with hard facts supporting that key buying emotion. My favorite books are Mind Control Marketing and Cashvertising. Then I branched out to the other top 200 books for sales psychology, social, and dating. Once I reviewed what I wanted to know (similarities, theories, etc) I started to test them out slowly and compare to others in the advertising niche. Now I can spot bullshit and avoid being labeled as bullshit because of it.

Commercials today are a good gauge at how psychology needs to be masked. A strong sales pitch ad works, but what works better are the ads that entertain the consumer, not outright sell to them.

Farmers insurance taught me that you can entertain people with comedy but still laser target the "dependable, count on me, I'll take care of your needs" tied to jaded customers of Gieco where they got screwed over by car accidents or gaps in the insurance policy.

Amazon taught me that if you know how to present an incentive to someone, you can fool them into being loyal and buying from you only.

These are real lessons, now compare to Neil. Pathetic, right?

    @soulcollector
    @netmoney1

That's exactly what I was thinking. Although those grand television advertisements do work for brand presence and add to their trust/dependability factor, it is a completely different market than IM/DM newcomers looking for the "1 secret trick that SEO specialists don't want you to know about!". He is using a method similar to the Nigerian Prince scam, and other email scams like it, where you weed out advanced/knowledgeable readers with obviously flawed information in the pitch, to reach the lowest common denominator (intelligence-wise). Then you use a dash of hype and painless calls to action ("It's just $1!" and "seats are almost gone!") to encourage people to act before thinking.

Even further, in the future, he will then be able to use this newly refined list of gullible/easy-to-pitch newcomers who purchased his seminar to sell even more products. E.g. "Google has cracked down on methods presented in our previous seminar due to too many people using out secret sauce! Don't worry, we have beat them again! We will be holding a new seminar, but to protect the newest and greatest knowledge, only 100 seats will be available at $97! Act now!"

There is a lot to learn from what others do, whether that be learn what not to do or what you should definitely be doing. I am signed up to a number of lists from marketers in my niche as well as those from other niches as it's all about learning.

I really enjoyed your analysis of the two emails @netmoney1 and that was a lesson in itself.

Building s list is a fun process, but takes some time to get the process right.

Don't ever hesitate to find secret traffic sources and nail your campaigns out once it's big enough.

Getting subscribers can be a passive process so once enough people are in, try getting more while milking it.
