I sold a shirt and the dude is claiming it’s fake. I now have -$500 in my PayPal balance and I do not have the money to re pay it. What will happen? I have my saving account linked to my PayPal and my address but I am moving in like three months

Have you called PayPal support yet?

Best thing I can think of is that they will get the guy to send the shirt back or else you'll get your money back.

What happens if I just leave it negative? I am worried about that as the first priority

If PayPal cannot recover the debt the account will be locked (meaning you cant remove the bank account), they will attempt to reach out to you via email/phone/mail in order to collect repayment (they may offer a repayment plan). The debt will eventually end up with a collections agency who will pursue you (usually via phone/mail). The collections agency could potentially obtain a court order which would force you to repay the debt (very unlikely over $500). You won't be able to use PayPal again (with any of your original info). Not sure if a bad PayPal balance can appear as a collections account on your credit report.

Do you recommend paying it off? I’m a broke high schooler and my birthday is coming up soon and I’ll probbaly get enough to pay it t off

It's not fun being pursued over a debt. If I were you I would contact support and explain your situation. Be honest and they might work with you, even if only to arrange some form of repayment plan (a repayment of 40USD per month isn't unreasonable on a 500USD debt). Goodluck with whatever you decide to do.

I say take it easy and wait what happens. Something like that happend to a friend of mine (although in his case it was like 120€) and he haven't payed a cent yet. As others said, his account is also locked and he can't create a new with his bank data. But until now nothing happend and this is 1+ year ago.

In the worst case they try to reach out to you via mail or phone. In that case pay back the debt.

I’m really tripping out because I’m 14 and idk what to do. Does my age affect anything?

If you would live in the EU yes, because legally you are not allowed to sign any contract (including opening a paypal account), so this could "save" you but I don't know about the US.

I’m willing to pay t but I really would not like to. I don’t mind not having a PayPal account because I’m sure there are alternatives I could use and save myself $500. What do u suggest? I’ll

Dispute it with paypal, easy as that unless it really was fake in which case they should send it back

I can't give you an absolute answer because if you get in trouble you would point to me lol ... since you are 14 I would say wait and see whats happen. Again I don't know about the US but here in EU they would first send you a reminder that you have to pay, untill that point nothing will happen.

Heck of a shirt if you are in the hole 500.00 because of a claim.

It the USA you cannot enter into a legally binding contract so PP can't do anything to you but they may send something to your parents should they find out your age.

Talk to your parents, not paypal, not a bunch of randomers on a forum, not your bank, not anyone.

Your parents.

These are your 3 options. You won't be able to use PayPal again with your original info regardless of which option you choose.

1. Pay the debt. PayPal will likely ask you to verify yourself with an ID after payment. You won't be able to do this at 14.

2. Get your parents to close the savings account and open another. I don't think you can do that yourself at 14. The only issue you really have is the linked account, they will continually attempt to debit it. If it goes to collections you should expect letters.

3. Ignore it completely and hope it goes away.
Is there any way that PayPal can take the funds out of my bank account because it’s a savings account for college.

You are 14 so don’t worry they can’t hold a debt BUT DONT IGNORE IT you need to talk to PayPal, find the person who has the shirt and get it sent back. Otherwise it’s clear the guy is pulling a fast one.

Probably but go ask your parents and discuss with PayPal, DONT WORRY it will be sorted out.

pther than me getting the shirt back, how would getting it shipped back solve anything in my negative balance? I’m sorry I’m very confused with all this stuff :(

Your savings account, if tied to PP, can be accessed by PP.

TALK TO YOUR PARENTS!

Talk to your parents as you aren’t in trouble. They will guide you.

Getting the shirt back can help as can guarantee the person won’t want to give it back and strengthens the case that the refund was fraudulent.
If it was a fake shirt it should be new not worn e.t.c
