Sorry, but I really need to vent. Like I said in previous posts, I have social anxiety. Well, I mustered up the courage to walk to the trashcan today, and some random guy in an SUV stopped and asked me if I want to sell our (my and my husband's) car. He was tough looking too, so I was a little freaked out. I just said no and he said "alright" and drove off. I'm really sick of our neighborhood, it's ghetto and there's a lot of sketchy people here. But, we can't afford to move. My husband makes enough to pay the bills and put food on the table, but I want us to live somewhere nicer. My ideal living situation would be a small house in the country with not a lot of neighbors. I am willing to do what I need to do work-wise to make that happen. Rather than complaining, I am going to start working more on my crime news website. If anyone can give me any pointers that can help me make some money through it, please let me know. I would really like to see us move when our lease is up at the end of the year. We live in a trailer that we own, so we can probably get enough out of it to cover a security deposit and first month's rent somewhere else.

Also, if you know of any online jobs that would be good for someone with social anxiety, please let me know. I am only looking for part-time work as I already have a part-time job, and I become too stressed when I have too much on my plate at one time.

dont risk losing a roof above your head just to move somewhere else, bide your time and only move if you can guarantee a house in the long term and still make sure you can always pay those damn bills.
ive been in similar situations and its a losing battle every time.

It's a local/regional news site. You can view it at vacrimereports.com. I haven't worked on it in awhile because I wasn't sure how to go about monetizing it, or if I should keep rewriting articles or summarize them via autoblogged or a similar Wordpress plugin.

rather bide your time and live in a crappy place than go into dept trying to live somewhere you just can't afford at the moment.

If that was mine, I'd add in categories such as Crime in Petersburg, Crime in Sussex, etc... then I would get to rewriting content on a regular basis. I would probably rewrite 3 - 5 stories a day and populate the site with legit original content.

Backlink it some - Web 2.0s are free to do and if you want I'll even give you some free SEO as well from one of our services.

Get rid of the hostgator favicon and just grab a free image of VA from Google and use that but name it Crime in Virginia before you add it.

Clean up that footer and lose the outbound link there as well.

I would think that after a month of content you'll start generating some traffic and at that point it would be time to monetize and I'd be using a CPA pop up initially to test to see if you can lock the reader out unless they fill out a simple survey. Those are all over the place and not uncommon for a news site.

That is just for starters anyway.

Thanks for the tips! I will get back to you on your SEO offer after I have spent more time writing content. Would you consider rewriting to be original content, or should I also write totally original pieces such as opinion articles?

What do you think of the template? I am not good at the styling stuff, so I am thinking of using a simpler template that is easier to maintain.

Rewriting can easily be original content as that is pretty easy to do and even easier if you use something like Dragon (I think there is a free download in the downloads section if you do not have it).

As to template, I'm the world's worst designer so I should not offer you any thoughts there, but that theme looks good for a crime news site.

BassTrackerBoats made the best suggestions that are easy. Content on your homepage is crucial for you right now. I would get quite a bit more content or words onto your homepage about Crimes in Virgina. Sometimes with Wordpress posts, you can run the posts on the first page, and extend the excerpt for the article to full summary. This will post the articles or stories you've already written on your homepage with all the text from the article showing. Find the shortcode for your posts or blog and put in on the homepage. You can also use WP-Sticky plugin to help organize your posts.

YoastSEO is a great plugin to utilize, but that's once you get content.

Anyways, best of luck to you and your adventures.

On a side note, where is the best place to put my resume on this forum? From time to time, I like to take writing projects to increase my income when we need the extra money.

That is not allowed unless you are setting up a sales thread and you don't have the requisite # of posts to get one.

You would be well served keeping an eye on the Hire a Freelancer section though as often times people post to hire writers.

Personal question, but whereabouts is your combined income currently, and how much do you think you'd be able to pay in rent comfortably? I know a few places in my area that are dirt cheap but in nice parts of the city.

About $22,000 I'd say... We also have a cat and a dog which we won't ever get rid of (I had to get rid of a lot of pets in my past due to my family moving when I was growing up).

The rent I think we'd be able to pay would be $800 without utilities. That would be living really cheaply, though.

Write content. As long as you can put together coherent sentences with a bit of research behind them, you can charge 2c per word relatively easily. 50,000 words per month is $1,000 per month - that's only just over 1,000 words per day which would definitely qualify as part-time, and you don't need to interact with anyone ever. Write a few sample articles and make a post on BHW Content/Copywriting section for $30 offering your services. As long as you charge slightly under what your writing is worth you will be flooded with more work than you can handle. Feel free to PM me when you have a few sample articles written and I will tell you what you should charge.

As per a recommendation from a seasoned user on blackhatworld, I would charge $0.10 per word. I have been working in marketing/copywriting going on ten years now, so I have plenty of writing experience. I also worked for an Inc 500 company for three years. I already did some writing work for someone on here, so I can prove that my writing skills are up to par.

This. Your article writing skills are extremely good. For the articles you sent me, there are plenty of people that would pay 5+ cents a word. Write 3,000 words a day at a leisurely pace, and you're making $50k a year right there.
