    Hey everone,

I don't know if this is the right place to ask or not, but I have a problem.

I've been the web editor in chief of a daily newspaper in my country for 6 months.

I got that website's daily traffic from 130.000 to around 170.000. That always changes ofcourse. At the weekends that site gets 40.000 less visitors etc. That's not a problem though. I started using twitter and facebook more effectively, I changed the website design. Added commenting feature. I have a team of 6 people and I trained them a little bit about copywriting. They started writing a lot more attractive headlines for news. All of these efforts got me 30K more daily.

But I'm stuck at that level for 2 months. I need to get that daily visitor range up to 200K levels.

What can I do about that? Any suggestions?

    Thank you

Most of the traffic You get in that niche is social networking. So in my humble opinion You have to double your work on Twitter and Facebook.

Also nice position on some news related keywords in Google would be helpful!

Good luck with getting traffic :)

I really don't want to push too hard... Over 300 news posts are added daily. When I tried to post all these on twitter and facebook page I started losing followers and fans. I setup twitterfeed to post 5 latest news every half an hour and tweets are syndicated with facebook page.

Actually, I don't think I need SEO that hard. That's why I said I don't know if here's the right place to ask.

I get hundreds of backlinks daily, including .gov .edu .mil sites. I don't have to care about that I guess.

    That's where I am stuck. I don't know what else I can do :)

To me it seemed to be well set..
May thats the limit of all the visitors you can get for that particular niche .

or you should start building inner pages for other related niche to drive more traffic

I'd create multiple targeted facebook / twitter pages. You obviously can't post all your stories, but if you have, say, a page for people who want to follow a certain author they would probably subscribe to see their column every day. You could easily use RSS graffiti for this.

For the general feed, choose which articles to syndicate carefully. Don't want to waste a post.

post less on fb twitter pages, the more you post the more annoyed they get.. even if its not spammy.. 5 every half hour will seriously fill their profile with your posts.

so try posting the most popular or top 3 articles per day.. or even weekly. and at peak times !! (4-11 PM)

and encourage your traffic to share more also. is the share/retweet button kind of hidden in the corner like most sites with tons of traffic but very little shares?

actually.. a custom facebook app could be better than making a ton of fan pages.. you could have them install it and choose what to be posted on their wall at certain times or whenever its available.. it would be easier for everyone and people wouldnt be spammed with stuff they dont want to see.

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely try that. Columnists get more traffic than news actually. Thanks.

I guess you're right, I kinda felt that people are annoyed :)

I think I'll remove syndication and post exclusive news at peak times.

And yes, I don't encourage people to share, at all. My site has an audience which is not really tech-savvy. Audience is over 40 years old and most of them don't use social media. What I'm trying to do is, actually one of the things I'm trying to do is creating a new audience for that page. I think I really should make social sharing easier and encourage it.

    Thanks for the tips.

That site was full of general news. Politics, economics, celebrities and sports mainly.

I added more niches like woman, autos, technology & computers, arts and that added a little more traffic.

Google Places, are you freaking kidding me - a national publication looking for an additional 50K visitors per day is not going to find them on Google Places. Go back to DP or WF!

Why dont you have profile for each section of your site, maybe a twitter account just for politics, another one just for economics etc, that way your follower can pick a section so they dont get updates overload. Hard core fans can always subs the lot.

this is right on point, id create like 5-10 main twitter accts to post that categories news articles from the day..

    example -

    dailynewsSports
    dailynewsHeadlines
    dailynewsWeather
    dailynewsTraffic

that way you can tweet multiple times throughout the day, the main stories in each category and let people select their targeted interests..

You can try Daily-Traffic.com I used that for about 4 months and they give you real visitors and unique IPs... The only bad thing is that most of the visitors are from china...

In addition to FB app you might also consider having an IPhone/IPad app developed. Does not cost much and would look good if you're after an additional and younger audience.

Make it downloadable from your main and FB pages and design it with customization options for the end user- so they can follow narrowed down news categories of choice.

If your columnists are really good, the readers might even opt for instant notification from you whenever an article of interest gets published - giving you a direct channel of communication with them - maybe even as a paid /premiun one.

I don't know if people have said this because i started to scan the page, but set up individual twitter and facebook accounts for each sub section, like Tech News, World News, Entertainment news. That way there is less spam.

Just save the main one for breaking news. Then use them to advertise each other now and then like "If you want more Tech news, subscribe to whoever"

That is how i would do it anyway.
