You will need to decide which cms is best for you.

If you're beginning WP is the best, but then you will need to add cart plugins, etc.

There are cart CMS that are store ready like ZenCart - I'd recommend looking into that,.

I think the best is Joomla with VirtueMart plugin (also available in bundle from Virtuemart website) and SH404SEF for URL rewriting and other SEO tips.

Seeing you don't already have a supplier (to me that means you haven't researched it all completely yet) ... I'll say don't make a store based off what you think is cool, or what you like ... make it based of real keyword research, market analysis and profit margins.

Keyword research should be the foundation of your store. I can't emphasize this enough.

If you go for "kids clothing" ... a 22k keyword, you're up against kohl's, old navy, gap, etc. some very stiff competition.

Or you could go for "designer kids clothing" at 1300 exact / "designer kids clothes" at 4400 exact, and have a better shot at ranking, because its more long tail.

Ultimately, the more "niche" you go (less competition), the easier it will be to rank ... and if you can find products in a niche that sell for very high profit margins, you will find it much easier to make money.

You just want to invest time? If you said money too, I'd say set up a Magento store and buy a custom theme for it. Magento is a bit complicated to use, but it'll be good to do some studying OP.

Paypal has shoppingcarts you can pretty much just copy paste. If you need something more snazzy, look on code snippet sites for some good terminals. codecanyon has a few.

In regards to whether or not you need WP, and this is only personal preference for me, but I hated having any store on WP. I've made a few download sites with a very limited number of products, but a full blown store with a bunch of categories and descriptions and images turn it essentially to a blog from hell for me.

OP, put your questions in Google and see the results other people received for asking the same questions as you. It'll save you a lot of time.

besides setting up your own store (this will take time ..) you could offer your goods on amazon since the buyers are already there.

for your own shopping cart look out for one which makes multichanneling easy.

and yes as phpbuildt already mentioned keyword research can be the cruical point.

I'm gonna suggest you Magento. Is the best for ecommerce websites and also a good thing is that big companies are using it. You will not have problems with security and all other things.

i have seen a lot of online entrepreneurs now who started in social networking site like Facebook. If you do not have any idea, why try it first? Then, while you're doing your online selling in facebok, you can start do your market research. that's when you should decide where to invest your money. Free facebook online is a good dry run (trial and error) platform.

Write unique product descriptions/write a blog about your store, your products, deals/specials/promotions you're having.

Have good anchor text on your images.

Make your title contain a good keyword and have a nice opening statement on your homepage.

^ Are just basics. It's your store, have fun with it and get creative. Where could you talk about your products; what phrases do you see in stores you shop at that catch your eye?

Before you do anything.......make an extensive investigation into whether or not people who are doing the same thing you want to do......are actually making a profit.

Clothing is highly saturated and a pain in the ass, people love to return clothing.

Do market research first, actually try to sell some of your top items on Adwords as a test only, to see the reaction, sell items that you dont have in stock to see if people actually want to buy them,

in other words do preliminary market research before you do anything, because once you start it could be a long long road ahead,

now go make a million bucks....

if you are going to Sell other peoples stuff i wouldn't bother tbh unless you know what you are doing but if you have really good designs and they are unique
IE dead legacy, pearly king, eleven Paris ETC

once its all started up use Facebook and do giveaways "share this picture and comment to get a chance to win this t-shirt".
even get to fashion days, in the UK if you have really good unique designs you can make bank

Clothing is a restricted category on Amazon. He'd have to be approved first, and he would need a site in order to be approved. I was on Amazon for years in a restricted category. There is a lot of money to be made on Amazon in a restricted category, but I gave it all up because I had enough of Amazon. I don't like them at all. Dropshipping is a bad idea on Amazon. The merchant should have the stock. Dropshipping is the biggest cause of things going wrong when it comes to Amazon. My friend was also on Amazon. She sold clothing and did extremely well. We both left at the same time because neither of us could take it any more.

To the OP, it is a tough field. I am in the niche from hell which is as hard as clothing is. As someone else said, you will be competing against department stores. The competition is fierce. It is also very cut throat. Your competition will do everything to get you off the front page. But it can be done. It takes hard work. I have ranked for years for keyword phrases that were not my dream keywords. I am now ranking for my dream words (think dream keywords like clothing or children's clothing if that was my field) but it took a lot of work and I buy fiverr gigs every week.

First get a domain. Then get a web utility program to make your site. If you don't have the money, get it off demonoid. I personally don't like magento and all the open source carts. It is not good for SEO. Your store is not hosted on your site. Put all the products on your site and use Mals shopping cart. It is free and it is good.

Study your competition. Study their prices. Study clothing trends. You should know your field inside and out. If you don't, you have to learn. Go into stores and look at the labels of children's clothing. If you want to sell boutique clothing, go into boutiques and write down the brand names. If you want to sell every day clothing such as Carters, go into department stores and look at the clothing labels. Look up the companies and ask what their wholesale requirements are. If you need a physical storefront, then you can't buy wholesale and will have to find a reseller.

I wish you much luck. It is very hard competing against department stores, but like I said, it isn't impossible. It can be done.
