    Hi All!
I have been hearing different people says different things.
Some people saying google doesnt care about social signals and some people saying you can't rank without them.
So, do I need social signals to rank on google?

Untrue. Socials are NOT very helpful to directly rank. You only "need" them to help make a large linkbuilding campaign look more organic... or to help index your links or new pages.

I pull a lot of factor measurements daily... social signals only correlate as a factor some of the time. When I get specific into product category searches only about 40% of them have strong correlation for social. Keep in mind your search terms matter a lot. For example if you target "best video games" you are asking google to weigh "popularity" more heavily in the mix. Odds are this can be split with ratings and review data in addition to social signals and other factors.

There are category searches that social signals do nothing for. So do your homework before investing in social. Also do your homework before writing them off too.

The short answer : NO you don't need them and there is pretty much zero evidence they rank you higher.

I remember reading about how they were speculated to become a ranking factor in the future, but I've never seen any confirmation or evidence of them being a ranking factor.

However since then, some people, mostly likely social signal sellers, have been perpetuating the notion that social signals will increase your rankings. This is probably because they saw data where sites with high rankings also had a lot of social signals, but correlation doesn't mean causation.

Similarly to what ThopHayt said, real social signals can be used to indirectly gain backlinks by propagating your content around various social media networks.

Social signals that are from real pages and not social signals farms work a lot better standalone. The ones you normally get are mainly there to make your campaign look natural. We tested social signals by themselves on a local website and saw a small nudge on ranking improvements from medium competitive keywords, nothing huge. So it depends on the source of the signals too.

social signals can't give ranking. It gives traffic to the content so that you need them.
