hey I am wondering if anyone knows where I can rent an inexpensive server? I need a reliable server that won't crap out. I don't need much space at the moment, I just need enough space to put up a couple of videos. Less than 0.5 GB should do it. I should be getting several thousand visits/streams per day so I would need the bandwidth to support that (maybe more later).

That's basically all I want to do.. Have a simple website that has a few videos on it. One that is decently fast (so the video will download faster than is being watched), and is not so expensive.

I donno, do you think I could get one for under $100 / month? Or even cheaper maybe? As long as it doesn't go below what I need.

P.S. is Amazon any good? Or would I be better off renting from somebody else?

Well, if it *doesn't matter* so much, should you host your own? Why not blogger or something?

If you need less than 2TB a month, try VPS 3 from 1&1 (1and1.com) for $59/month. I think they currently have a deal where you get the first 3 months free. I prefer using a VPS vs. an actual server for simpler stuff because they can be provisioned very fast.

Here are reliable and reputable suppliers of discount servers for below $100/month. These are not VPS's, these are full blown dedicated servers:

corenetworks.net (Note there is a setup fee for the smallest server)
theplanet.com (Look at the bargain bin)
volumedrive.com (I've never used them but everyone here seems to like them)
tranxactglobal.com (Haven't used them in a while but I hear they are still awesome)

hmmmm if Blogger does the job then I will definitely look into that. But can they support high quality audio/video? If there is no downside to using blogger then maybe. Although having a personal domain would be kinda nice.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into them and let you know :)

I know blogger, even wordpress will give you tons of space, bandwidth, can be created into simple landing pages and are recognized as "domains". Hope you have a look into it. I have landings on blogger, but I am moving all of them to a domain with other subs and not so "advertisement" like, but if you are looking for best host, most storage space (didn't seem) most bandwidth, could be a good idea for you.
At least, if you want to try ideas first, do it on blogger, than put it in a paid domain/host.

I will definitely try blogger but can you edit the main html on your page? Or can ou only add gadgets? I just want to be able to make my video autoplay (not an embed, the video will actually have to be uploaded to blogger if that works) and for it to be much better quality than youTube. I didn't know you could upload 0.5 GB onto your blogger page? If so then that's awesome. (If you can do this, why the hell do they compress the shit out of youTube videos?)

Who are you talking to. Not me I think because those choices are for dedicated hosting right?

I may be wrong here. But it MAY be hit and miss on the user being able to "stream" The video. I wouldnt say blogger would be able to send it out fast enough for your users. And even the cheaper dedicated servers may struggle under load.

I have no doubt that you can get a cheap server to host them all. But being able to stream them all fluidly is a different story.

Start off with a shared hosting plan and work you way up as you need more resources. It'll be a waste of money just going in at the deep end before you even need to. Check out webhostingtalk dot com.

I was talking to you in my second post, and to the other peeps in my first post. Sorry I meant to do it all in one post but I frigged up.

Yes I am definitely worried about this. How much do you think it would cost to rent a server that can deliver a stream faster than the video is being played? (for a cable connection). If Blogger can't do this then I dunno..

But does the streaming speed depend at all on the bandwidth (probably)? And if so, do you even think I could afford such a server for under $100/month? Or am I dreaming lol? And yeah upgrading is definitely a good idea so hopefully I can find a host who will allow me to do that without ting me down.

So yeah, to get even more specific, my videos are only going to be about 5 minutes long. So if the streaming speed is at least that fast (downloaded in 5 minutes or less), or maybe even a bit slower like 6 minutes. That is what I am aiming for.

Defitneley do not get from 1and1. If you have a look around. So many people have had bad experiences with them and some have been screwed because of it.

I suggest getting a VPS. It will suit your needs. You can find some real good offers at

K well thanks to your suggestions I have one website solved. Yay!

I just had one more question. I am planning on hosting a slightly bigger site (with videos as well). The only problem is: the site will contain copyright stuff (videos and such). If I find a server to use will I have to find one in some other country? If I use a local one can't I get sued by hollywood or something, or will the site just get shut down?
