I have been very surprised at not being able to find a better deal on a laptop. My hunch is that I am paying approx. £100 too much on each one because of that piece of sh1t V1sta license that I dont want. I would ideally like a MacBook then dual boot but cant afford and Crapple are taking the p1ss with their pricing atm.

Even more confusing is it seems that even the worst laptops that look like they would last about 5 mins with P3 chips are still going for £100???

I am looking at things like this as a good option:

    Code:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150324
*I dont work for them and I am not an aff either before anyone asks!*

As it seems for £200 you get a piece of crap, for £300 you get something reasonable for £400 above it looks like a good spec that will last a long time. So even though I cant afford it I think I will prob have to shell out for it.

I am basically going to buy an OEM Win XP Pro from eGay and install ASAP.

But I cant help thinking there must be a better option as I cant seem to avoid getting V1sta and even ppl that install Linux seem to charge roughly the same too.

Does anyone have any better advice. Ideally I want to buy something like the above with a discount and no V1sta license to save £50 or so...?

Thanks as always for anyone that can help.

You might search out "whitebook" or "white book" or "barebones laptops"
these are stripped down without, wireless cards, cpu, hard drive and memory.

The idea is you buy those and install them which theoretically saves you money because the labor if done by you instead of the mfgr.

Key is finding the components on sales.

Keep in mind their are only a few companies that actually make laptops.

The branded companies normally buy these premade units and install the components and slap their name on it.

For some reason the idea of a guy in the UK with Walker Texas Ranger for his avatar just makes me hysterical.
