Hi. I am going to try and rank for some keyword. I will buy a domain, build some content on it and link build using free methods and advice given by people on this forum. Now the question is - how competitive keyword phrase should I choose. What is realistic for the first time? I am thinking to rank in top 5 results of google.
I am thinking of "keyword phrase" - XX.000 results in google. What would you say? I do not want to pick very competitive phrase for the first time, I want results on this one. But of course I don't want to lowball and make it too easy as well.

    What would you guys say?

I can only say that you've asked too broad of a question. Ranking well for any keywords depends on the competition in the top 10 results in G. I don't believe in how many search results G shows for a term - 100K or 100 million results. The top 10 search results are your real competitors.

I'd say, pick your keywords - put them in G's keyword tool and look at the number of searches G's keyword tool shows (look for terms with an exact match of 1000 searches or more) - then look at the top 10 search results for your chosen keywords in G and decide if you can build more and better backlinks than they have.

You can put the URL of a site in Yahoo in this format - site:www(dot) competitor.com and get a good idea of how many backlinks they have.

There is software out there that will do this research for you - Market Samuari and Micro Niche Finder but they aren't free.

Then there is the topic of analyzing your competition's web site layout and SEO optimization, but that is another story.

Thanks for replies. Ok for example I found this keyword, google tool says:
    global searches per month 2500
    local searches per month 1700

"keyword phrase" in google search returns 15.000 websites

I asume it looks promising - not many websites and decent number of searches? What do you guys say about it?

Now like you posted I should check my competition in detail:

But I think its a mistake here, the bolded part does not show number of links, it shows me how many pages the site has... Shouldn't it be something like:
    links:www(dot)competitor(dot)com
    link:www(dot)competitor(dot)com

I tried these two in yahoo however it did not work as well.

I know it works in google, but google shows only very little portion of backlinks, so its useless... So howexactly do I do it in yahoo? :)
