I have a kw with 5400 searches and 10 suggested variations that get 4400 each. Is it likely I can rank these variations if I target my main kw of 5400, since the keywords are similar?

Also, since the variations are similar, and are showing the same numbers, should I assume it's the same traffic?

Google uses different strings for same results. If you search for "I wanna buy dog food" or "where to buy dog food" the results will be dog stores.

If the keyword variations contain the root words then you will rank for the variations by targeting the main keyword.

YES, it would bring you same traffic and G delivers the same results for similar variations.

Yes, I've done this successfully in the past and the posts ended up ranking for the LSI variants, despite most of those variants not being used verbatim in the articles.

As for if it's the same traffic, you're using the Google Keyword Planner, right? There was an article on Search Engine Land about a technical glitch where some LSI variants would actually display combined search volume results rather than the search volume for an individual keyword (in other words, the results were inaccurate). I've linked to the article below if you're interested in reading it.
