Hey everyone, I am interested in starting a forum. I have about 5-10 people that will be dedicated admins and have a lot of traffic sources so it should be good. My only issue is the niche. How can I monetize a forum and make money? Which niches tend to be good for this? I was thinking maybe an SEO forum, internet marketing forum, or something of the like..

    Please help, and thanks!

Hey dude - I might have just what you're looking for. I was making some serious loot flipping wordpress niche sites last year and bought siteflipforum.com - this would be a GREAT niche for a forum, and easy to monetize. You could get crazy members from WarriorForum, Flippa and Digitalpoint.

The domain is expiring in like a week - I have no plans of renewing it, I would be more than happy to accept an offer if you are interested.

I'm not expecting you to throw down $500, because I wasn't going to renew it anyways, but if you would like to get the jump - drop me a PM.

    Good luck with everything,

    Cheers.

I've been told that forum traffic is very difficult to monetize. Think about it. How often are you clicking ads at the various forums you frequent?

I assume this happens rarely if ever. It's probably the same for everyone else too. Remember forums are places where people go to learn more. These are hyper-focused individuals who are unlikely to be swayed from their goals by ads.

In the end, I think they only money in forums is in CPM ads or getting paid for impressions, and then you can make money if you have thousands of page-views or ad impressions per day.

Of course, you can monetize for sale threads, and there are some other options, but I think forums are a hard way for budding marketers to get their feet wet...unless you can wait 2-3 months to make any money.

Well this can be a fun project for a while until it gets big. I will definitely be doing SEO on this forum and will be getting a lot of members to sign up, probably around a few hundred within a few days if I can get the right niche, because the people that may join may not be interested in something they don't know about. However, as long as the forum has good content and a decent memberbase to start off with I should be good. I am not trying to get a forum as big as BlackhatWorld but maybe something that eventually would hit below the 20k alexa mark is what I want to achieve in terms of traffic. I think that impressions would be a good idea, could get thousands of cents from that and CPM ads could work. Like with the text ad links, where some of your text has a link to an ad (don't know what it's called).

Otherwise what would you say would be a great way to making money? Right now I have just been a member of an affiliate site but I really want to make a living on the side making money online. What do you suggest?

    Thanks

As stated forums are hard to monetize. It takes a lot of time and effort to get a big user base of regulars and you will only make pennies until this happens. It is doable though.

As for niche you have to think - the high paying niches generally have more competition while low paying ones traffic and users are easier so really any niche is profitable.

forums are hard to monetize but easiest to flip/sell.
