I am venturing into the offline marketing world for 2012, and have a question that I have been unable to find a good response for when I am talking to prospects.

Everyone tells me that your business needs to have a facebook fan page. Strictly from an SEO standpoint, I agree.

BUT, what marketing strategies can I share with my prospects about what to do with it? Most businesses I have looked at have a fan page with few if any content. I do not see where that helps market the company. (Personally, I don't get Facebook, and don't use it much. I don't feel the need to share the minutiae of my life with the world.)

When I tell someone they need a fan page, I would like to tell them that you can do XXX, and XXX, and XXX to bring in more customers.

Can some of you fine people give me a few pointers of how to use social media for local brick and mortar businesses?

Linked in I have a good grip on. Twitter and Facebook not a clue.
