Also, is anybody in this niche here? How tough is it to make sales outside of etsy and ebay?
It'd not hard in my opinion. The best way to build a brand and build a buyer base is to set-up a stand at festivals, car shows, swap meets, etc. Once people visit your wife's stand and tries on jewelry you hand them a business card. You then tell the customer "This is only a handful of the jewelry that I make, alot more can be found online"
That's just one the ways I know how to market jewelry. I used to attend car shows and swap meets and the jewelry stands always had their own websites, business cards, and customers looking at jewelry.
The key is to interact with customers. Market via word of mouth.
Edit: I know this is sort of offline marketing, but you could market offline just to start a buyer base. And once your wife's website has some traffic you could start online marketing.
Use a small selection on eBay to funnel traffic to a larger selection on your website.
The best way to grab sales is through word of mouth. Since there are already a lot of competitors regarding that niche, convince all the potential consumers that your wife's handcrafted jewelry is the best.
I think better is to try with keywords for your shop`s name + smth outstanding
