Im in the middle of fixing my Xbox 360 right now, im upgrading the fan from a 5v and turning it into a 12v (just needs wires changed around a bit) but I need some advice. I got the wires cut right on the Xbox and spliced together, it tells me to grab a seperate piece of wire I have lying around so I grabbed a old usb plug I didn't use.. I cut it open and instead of it having just the single copper wire it has 4 colored wires inside it and like some insulation fibers or something mixed in it.. would this be ok to connect to my fan?? I'm going to leave the youtube tutorial below that I am following and a picture of what the inside of a usb cord looks like (as soon as i can find the type google images are not looking the same these are shiny with white strings inside) I hope someone can help me with this.

Can you not just strip the colored insulation off one of the wires and use that? I work in maintenance and fool with that crap all the time. There should be some copper wire under the plastic. If not, wire is incredibly cheap.

im not talking about the rubber insulation thats usally around the wires, they are shiney colored wire that i believe is copper under the insulation with some kind of white string mixed with the wire.. im not sure if the picture below is what are inside the usbs but its the closest ive found so far I will try to hook up the webcam and take a pic soon.

    Use an ethernet cable.

Under the plastic coating of the multiple colored wires inside the ethernet chord is copper. I used to do this kind of thing when making lag switches for ps2. Good times :p

I just decided to go ahead and grab another piece of wire I had lying around, what a shame just waisted a USB cord.. even though I got like 5 of them anyway I hate waisting things..

@justin im doing a x-clamp mod and a fan mod because i got a red ring of death not my exact idea of fun lol you can some over and do it for me if you want I have been spending hours on it (finding out what parts I need, going to lowes and radio shack, doing the tutorial step by step watching each part like 5x each). Thermal paste was all over the place I had a hard time getting it off but not as hard of a time getting those x-clamps off that was nerve racking I thought I was going to break the motherboard.
