This morning someone asked me to give them a price on SEO services for their business. They haven't bought a domain yet, it is a start up company. I told them that I would have to look to see how competitive their keywords are. She actually asked me how much to get her site #1 on google but I explained to her that no one can guarantee that.
Anyway here is the screenshot for her keyword, I am an IT consultant but I have never charged anyone for seo yet so I don't know what the going rates are.
It is a 2 word keyword, I deleted one of them from the screenshot to post it up here. It's not an extremely common word.

No such thing as an ideal price for SEO. You have to read your client and figure out how much is he willing to spend on SEO, and charge just under that to make it seem like a good deal. I would charge on a keyword basis, usually between $100-$300 per keyword, per month.

Alternatively, you could charge based on what your time is worth. Since the process will take some continued maintenance, you may want to consider an hourly rate plus a bonus for certain benchmarks as the ranking increases.

It's my wife's cousin. She's a good friend so I want to give her a decent rate and maybe discount it a bit. I don't really like doing business for family or good friends but she needs some help so I don't mind much.

ok888 she doesn't have a site yet so no backlinks. Unless I am mistaken in what you are asking.

You need to know exactly how much effort for how much time would you need to bring her up. Calculate the approax time in hours and then multiply it with your rate per hour. Thats is it.

Since it is family it is much harder to choose a price. Typically you would analyze your client and what you may think they can afford, and name that price. With famiy however, I would just charge a little over what it would cost me to get what I needed done.

Since she is part of the family and she is business owner . Do it for her for Free !!
    Pros:
She is a business owner , sooner or later , she will meet other business owners ( references )
It will make you look good of front of your in-law
It will make your wife happy
    Cons:
You will lose some time to get reputation and a solid reference
    Conclusion :
Think of this as an investment
    Cheers

Charge her what is costs you and use it for a reference since its family

most other potential clients will want to see results / portfolio type things
so leverage this "family" for more business later.
