A few years ago run a home server off dsl line - a bit of a mickey mouse job but hosted my website for a fair few years off a intel ps2 chip

Im thinking about doing this again but getting a dedicated line in and some decent kit (within reason)

I have been looking around the net for a answer to this question and have had mixed answers

the question is how many domains per ip some say there is a limit but my friend who run a business hosting said that he has 10s of thousands of same ip.

Any other tips from people that are doing it would be great.

    It all depends really.

What sort of bandwidth will the dedicated line have? how bandwidth intensive will your site/s be? How many visitors do you expect online at a single time (this will play a part in what specs you will require for the server), eg if you are just serving up static htm pages resource usage will be relatively low compared to dynamically generated pages.

You obviously have some sysadmin skills if you ran a server before. Have you considered renting an unmanaged server. Theres some good deals around if you know where to look.

If you want to ask anything else, post away :)

You can get started from $79 p/m at rackmounted. taht gives you 8 IP-s. If you don not expect much tarffic nor processor use, there is a special offer at $49, but it's a little slow machine 80G HD, half gig ram and single core. 79 is core 2 duo, 1G, 250G. If you're creating revenue already, and want to increase it, this is the probably the way to go. If it's for fun only, save the cash and go with your own box.

I've outranked a few aged sites simply by having fresh content updated more often than they do. Having more targeted backlinks than they do doesn't hurt either.
