I agreed to help a few friends promote their new sports blog in exchange for the ad income. But I'm at a loss as to what the best approach is.

Since they will technically be covering sports news, it becomes difficult to track keywords that I can rank because today's news is yesterday's garbage.

I figure the best way is to do more analysis and to find many long tail keywords that have staying power and do traffic bait articles just to drive the users.

Or another way is if I had a way of tracking trending keywords daily and have my writers post an article regarding that keyword asap.

I've tried spamming twitter but the accounts get banned kinda quick and its more work than its worth.

    What do you guys think?

I used to write up an article ASAP and post it. Once posted hit the big sites like Digg, Reddit etc and after a while if the site is good enough people will come back on their own which will get the ball rolling with traffic.

Did you use any software to track the trending keywords?

TBH I didn't take it too seriously. I would follow trending topics from google trends and write up a quick unique 500 or so word article. I would then bookmark it around the big sites and track the traffic through analytics.

I found that if you are amongst the first to write up and article and bookmark it you can get some decent traffic come through just by using this method. Obviously you would need to be a little more better setup than myself but if you have a schedule of the big games/sports news then it should be fairly easy for your writers.

thanks for the advice but post game news isn't gonna do that much. i think analysis is more realistic. trying to beat ESPN with news is too hard.

That is EXACTLY how I got started in SEO and internet marketing. The site I made about 2.5 years ago doing this method is PR3 with hundreds of hits per day and I haven't touched it in 2 years. And that was without scrapebox to backlink which probably would have been much better. But I just ignore the site now I get bored so easily with internet marketing so I need to work on 100 different projects at once. No focus.

You don't need to beat ESPN. Just join them. Let the big boys get spots 1-5, if you can get the news up decently quick and backlink it, you will eventually catch googles eye and start being ranked on the first page.

Quickest way is probably social bookmarking.

What other quick backlinks do you recommend for this method?

Social Bookmarking is definitely the best, and not abusing Twitter. A solid twitter account for the main site which auto posts any new blog posts to the Twitter account is easy free traffic + indexed instantly. You could even link the blog updates to a Facebook account too. Might as well as they will update automatically. All of those methods give you a chance to go viral and get Googles eyes on you instantly. If you want to build quick authority, scrapebox is always good too but you need to index the links using ping tools or indexing services.

If it's small why not try targeting local keywords? Like Basketball in Sydney or Soccer in Brisbane or something like that? Maybe you'll have better luck narrowing it down too to something like [sport name] in [suburb] [city]

Again kickflip nailed it! With this sort of site it is all about the social media traffic and getting it bookmarked with the big players. Setting up a feed to auto post into Twitter and facebook is definite must if you want to squeeze all the traffic you can.

Won't be long before big G clears a spot for you on the front page. Goodluck!!
