There has been a lot of discussions about SEO, whether it works or whether it's ethical to sell services and about some techniques, but no one talked about traffic.

I've been in unfortunate situation where I got a website to #1 and it received almost zero traffic, there is a thread about this. I have other websites that potentially will have the same issue. I'm planning on developing those then sell them. The problem is that the sponsored ads above the organic listing are sucking all the traffic.

But since no one is talking about this, there must be people making money off sites ranking in the top. I'm hesitant whether to start a new website because of this issue, but it's actually very tempting since once a website ranks, you get free traffic and have a passive income.

I need advice from those people, at least some tips on what to watch out for and what type of keywords to look for. Preferably some numbers too so I can get it right next time.

    Thanks in advance.

If you have a website ranked #1, even with all the paid ads you should still receive SOME traffic.

If you receive zero traffic, more likely than not it has to do with your keyword selection.

I am guessing if you go to the Google Adwords Keyword tool and type in your keyword and use the "Exact" search option rather than "Broad" you may find the search volume shrink to nothing.

I could be wrong but I am guessing this is the issue.

When you say making money are you talking adsense ? Adsense is a joke I have 3 sites in the top 2-3 of the search engines for high ranking holiday(vacation) terms and its summer time and the return I am getting is painfull.

The money I make on the net is from physical products I can supply myself...So SEO works to get me on the front page...adsense is shit...dont do much Cpa so couldnt tell you.

I agree this is the most likely case. I have plenty of sites ranked #1 and some below that on the first page. They all receive some traffic - even for very local terms that have low search volume. I have seen a number of academic studies that show people are actually more likely to click on the organic search results.

Sometimes the google keyword tool is simply wrong... What kind of a keyword is it and how many monthly exact searches does it have?

I think the data's just simply wrong, you should be getting like 45-60 visitors a day for a kw like that. It happens sometimes, but it's pretty rare. Or maybe there was a spike in queries for that keyword last year and that's why it's like that, who knows. But the point I'm trying to make is it's still definitely very profitable to rank sites, your case is just an exception.

If you want some numbers, I personally mostly stopped going for smaller keywords, instead I look for terms with 15-100k searches a month with high competition, because I think that's where the real money is, and you don't need to rank #1 to make money with those terms either. But I do still have a couple smaller keywords ranked too, and it's a nice "backup" kinda income.

Is there adwords competition on those keywords that would display ads above the organic listing? What's the percentage of the traffic you are getting?

Something doesn't seem right. I've got a handful of 3-6k exact terms ranked #1 and they all do pretty decent eventhough not a single one is a money making kw. These kw's have nothing to do with the adsense ads on page and they still do fairly well..

Yes there is, and I get about 50% at #1, and also when I rank high I also get a lot of traffic from other related keywords as well.

Just a thought, but maybe your stats or analytics package is not installed correctly?

Hmm, that might have been the problem, I never thought of that. But I have the same plugin on another site and all stats and showing in Google Analytics.

Honestly, if everything is working correctly than something is very wrong. Someone should at least have accidentally clicked your link! Whatever the root cause, you may want to take a look at your actual search engine listing and see if you can make it more appealing to users. I've gotten ranked first for a keyword that my site wasn't really particularly useful for and my listing reflected that. As a result I received greatly reduced traffic. When I changed that URL to better attend to the keyword, my traffic spiked dramatically.

Sometimes a plugin settings get overwritten by updates or other plugins. If you PM me your site I'll check for the G Analytics code.

If your ranked #1 and getting zero traffic your focusing on either loooooooooooooooooooooong tail keywords that no one is looking for or maybe keywords to misspellings that no one is typing. Let's get serious, go to google keyword tool, plug in your top competitor url and rank for the same keywords they are optimized for and I promise you, you'll see traffic. And if you're too lazy to do that, send me a PM. :)
