Hi everyone, i am building a new site and trying to rank for long tails keywords. I see my competitors are using virtually the same content on 100's of pages with only slight variations for example one page would be - dog training in New York - followed with content about dog training, then the next page would be dog training in California - with the same content from other pages....

is this ok to do? Will it even rank in search engines?

Coping same content is one of the worst technique in seo. Better you can go with spun articles. This may help you to get unique articles. Make sure that you have edited the article manually.

No, it's not ok at all! The uniqueness of content is one of the most important things in SEO. Don't do such mistakes. Or big G will find you))

If your site got indexed with duplicate content, google will still find you somehow and penalize you

Your completely right that you can use almost identical content and their sub-pages will still rank.

I'm not exactly sure why this happens, but I bet it has something to do with the quality of their backlinks(usually very good from what I've seen).

Out of curiosity, how much content do they have on each page? Is it a paragraph of information, or full 1000+ word articles of identical content?

It might work in the short term, but it's usually going to get penalized over the long run.

Nope. Don't use copied content. Try to use unique content for your site. It will be safer i think...

You will never get anywhere with duplicate content. Fresh unique content is always the best.
