i have the asusa Eee pc its pretty cool:) small size very portable maybe not to much space on the hard drive but a few usbs fix the problem and it doesn't have a dvd drive which i dont really care about , i think you can buy several brands for under $600 but just from my own experience stay away from HP laptops they go bad after about 2 years of use.

I've got a hp laptop that's been through hell and back a few times (I can't count how many times my kids have dropped it - even caught one of them standing on it). It's held up very well for me.

Anyway - have you considered buying a used one from the classifieds? You can probably get one with xp/office/etc... already on it for a couple hundred and save some money.

You don't need much more than a word processor for school right?

I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook.

    160GB Hard Drive
    Windows XP
    1GB RAM
    Atom Processor

I love it, its great. I use it for school. The screen is 10" so its very tiny.

If you want small and cheap here you go:

    1. Click Here
    2. Enter familyandfriends as password
    3. Click the following: "notebooks" > "ideapad" > "view S series"
    4. Under "IdeaPad S10 better netbook for improved performance", select "view models"
    5. Look for 4231AGU (Black) and click "customize"
    6. Click "contiunue", "continue", then "add to cart"

    Specs:
    Intel ATOM Processor N270 Single Core ( 1.60GHz 533MHz 512KB )
    Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz
    10.2 " WSVGA AntiGlare TFT with integrated camera 1024 x 600
    Industry Standard Touchpad
    160GB 5400
    6 Cell Lithium-Ion
    Broadcom 11b/g Wi-Fi wireless
    One Year Warranty

Not the best, but for class and taking notes there's no need for anything more. Plus, it's only $300 with Free Shipping, so save your money and buy something nice for your car.

Same here, except I think I own the 8.9'' screen. Love it, one of my greatest investments ever, and the screen isn't very tiny. You can browse webpages just fine, the only problem being is you have to scroll down more than you would on a larger screen, but it's really no problem. Again, one of my greatest investments ever (as a 15 year old :))

Im surprised no one has suggested dell's outlet store. You can get a really good deals there, especially in the business section. You just have to keep an eye out for the good deals.

I just bought a vostro 1310 for a relative. It has a 13" screen, 2.0ghz c2d, 4gb ram and dedicated graphics and it was $650 shipped.

This is the 4th laptop i bought through dell outlet, and they were all in perfect condition
