So i'm about to deploy a new site.

    It's big.

    Thousands of pages.

Will feature both a vbulletin and a WordPress install.

Obviously, i've outgrown my hostgator hatchling account.

Anyone want to recommend a Faaaaaaaast company?

    Thanks!:D

I use datashack.net for my dedicated server and haven't had any problems yet. 'save10' gets you $10 off a month.

Also check out webhostingtalk.com there's always crazy deals there.

    Cheers

I use xsserver they have been excellent so far.

I agree though, if your looking for speed and scalability CDN is the way to go. If you are price sensitive, I recommend amazon CDN - easy to set up an edge delivery network for all your images and downloads - will free up bandwidth on your local server and also ensure fast delivery of larger items wherever your visitors are based.

    Thanks all.

Ya i should mention it would be nice to stay around 50 bucks a month or so.

Also, I won't be serving media. Mostly just have lots and lots and lots of text.

I had one site go viral on me and my dedi server couldn't handle it.. Have switched everything to Amazon Cloud and haven't had a problem since. It does cost me about 70-100 a month but I am happy.

Goviral what was your server spec and when did it fall over (how much traffic)?

Nothing like a real world example for OP...

at its peak 3000+ uniques per second, basstrackerboats was on the other end of skype laughing at me as I was telling him the server load numbers.

Actually 3000+ per second was the last figure I could get out of the machine. So it was probably way over that.

This machine is a monster. but in the end it is only one machine. Amazon will put on more resources as your site starts going viral and that is why I am there now. Yeah you end up paying more for it but at least the site stays up.

however if you are doing number like reddit do then even amazon has its limits.

The other problem I had was that I didn't cache mysql calls and a few other things. So the server may have stayed up longer, if I prepared better. However I wasn't expecting the site to go viral like it did. I have been doing this sort of stuff a long time and that day was one of the funniest I have ever been a part of.

    Hi,

We've built our latest scalable apps on Amazon EC2 and we use Rightscale to manage all the scaling, you can bring the price down if you buy reserved instances on Amazon.

It is good - I'd be pissing my pants if I was getting 3000 uniques per second!!

Goinviral that's mad! I have a dedi (only £35 per month) for my 10k per month site - probably ultra overkill by the sounds of it!!!

Would love to know the spec of the box - I have never been part of a site that large so would not know hardware limits on that scale.

    specs are

    i7 quad core
    16gb ram
    1gig pipe to LA
Some sort of raided HD setup. cant remember off the top of my head. Killer machine but the content it was serving was mysql dependant so as I said I should have cached properly and things would have gone smoother, although it still would have toppled as it had no other machines to share load.

This is where the Cloud comes into it's own.

Cool, I have a potentially large web project underway and was asked about dealing with high traffic requirements, I had no idea really so this is useful information to me!

Yes the Beauty of the cloud I suppose! I think you also get load balancing servers that can span SQL requests over several servers? But I don't know much about that either !

    Very interesting stuff though!

Have read about the challenges twitter faced when scaling their services - that's also very interesting when you think they are dealing with millions of requests per second!!

    thanks goinviral

    my buddy recommended amazon too

for me, i would just want a very basic starter package.

can you tell me, whats the simplest package here that can handle my vbulletin/wordpress install?

    http://aws.amazon.com/

also, i'm assuming the interface is similar (in part) to hostgator control panel, and i'll be able to kinda do most of the same stuff?

    thanks

    forgive my ignorance :)

    go here
    Code:
    http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#pricing
and read it a couple of times. When I first wanted to go to amazon it all seemed confusing but once you read it a few times, it becomes clearer.

As "seomanifest" said if you go with reserved instances (basically means pre-paying) the price comes down. For example you give them $350 for 3 years upfront, for a small standard reserved instance. Then your server will basically only cost you $.03 per hour for unix box (this equates to about $21 per month).
Pretty cheap! I know alot of people will say but the $350 upront is a killer but if you think about it 350/36months = about $9.70 so your total cost per month over the 3 years is about $30.

Most sites will only require this level. I found my site requires a bigger instance (by the way instance basically means machine) but thats ok the price is still cheaper than what my dedi used to cost a month. At any time you can order more bandwidth and/or use auto-scaling so you never get into trouble if you start going viral.

Anyway as I said read and then re-read that page. At first it seems complicated but you will get it after a few looks.

    Holy crap man

this is the most complicated thing i've ver done. I'm used to the HostGator and Fantastico CP...

    God I feel dumb

I have finally managed to sign up with Amazon Services but all I want to do is create a simple wordpress install.

This is the first screen I see

Can you point me in the right direction?

    I assume i "make a bucket" haha

I looked for a tutorial but couldnt seem to find one

    thanks anyone!
