I have a client that is being out ranked by a lot of weaker competitors, not sure what to do now. We have a good white hat link profile, and more links than some of our competitors. Equal to or great PR, higher quality and optimized site. Yet we are being beat by a article from a magazine site, and other lower quality / linked competitors. When you guys are in this situation what do you do? The only thing I can think of is they have better site age, no better anchor text or anything. Feeling tempted to start buying some "gray hat" stuff, but this is for a branded company client.

I wish it could be fair. I wish quality could be accurately gauged by an algo. Unfortunately, you have to either spend big money or get a little dirty sometimes.

If you want to stay white hat, tweak and tune with the on site optimization report by IBP (Internet Business Promoter). For optimizing on site it is great as it is based on comparison and not so rigid like h1, h2,h3, title, bold, underline.

If its post Penguin, I'd suggest to wait with that site and switch to another project. Google obviously fucked up and will spend the next week fixing things - which once again will change the SERPs.

If its always been like that, then you simple don't have enough backlinks. Or your content is not entirely associated with the niche by Google algos.

They're not weaker if they outranked you I would say. ;)
Calm down, google is crazy these days. White hat seo doesn't mean a sh...t for google now.
We still need some time to adapt to the new google algorithm.

Well the majority of our back links are actually natural and industry related due to the companies reputation. We have done press releases, light book marking, directory submissions, onsite optimization, video distribution, social etc.

How about relative forum posting? Registering your real information, leaving your url and anchor......works wonders. Stay white hat.

THis is such stupid advice and not even funny. Dont post shit if you have nothing to say.

No offense but get in line. I think almost everyone was effected by this update and we can only speculate what to do next.

If what you have done isn't working, start doing something different. What do you have to loose?

The best thing to do, if you're pretty sure this guy/gal is doing something that violates Google's guidelines is report the site for spam. I can't post the link here, but goto to the Google Webmaster forums or search "Google report spam" to figure out how to report. It's straightforward, and Google will investigate. Bing too will soon start doing this.

Thats actually the worst thing to do. Nothing prevents from others to do the same to you as a revenge. I can fire xrumer and report YOUR site the next day, go prove you're the good guy in this story afterwards. :)

You mentioned your point by yourself. OVER-Optimization ;) Try to immitate the good ranking competitors in every aspect!
