im trying to get round this panda penguin saga and have done a few bits nothing major as of yet but ive noticed that Web 2.0 and press releases i have released lately rank higher then my site for the same keyword.

is this a sign of a penalty?

You need more naked urls as anchor text. It may also include over optimization onsite, but most problems I have seen are the result of aggressive keyword targeting in links.

FYI, once you change the % of anchor text your ranks *should* return almost immediately. Apparently Penguin does not have to run to de-penalize a site once the over-optimized backlink profile has been corrected. I restored another site today, and assure you this works.

Appreciate that mate, ill give it a go, should i vary the call for action anchor text across the whole site? or just on inner pages to get them numbers evenly spread on inner pages?

Without getting too technical, you need to analyze the backlinks of your entire site or at least those pages where you manually built links. Use ahrefs.com or similar for this.

You want your links to look as natural as they can. Look at the sentence above where I referenced ahrefs.com. That was me naturally typing. Mix in some www.ahrefs.com, http://www.ahrefs.com and http://ahrefs.com and you should be good. Don't over do it like many others have unsuccessfully tried.

Keep in mind that over-optimization occurs onsite too. Don't change your site UNTIL you have really given it a good effort to create a 2:1 ratio of natural backlinks to unnatural. Some backlinks profiles are huge, and deleting paid links, blog posts, etc. might be in order. But as a rule of thumb, never delete a backlink. It looks more unnatural when dozens of backlinks drop from a site's backlink profile.

    Best of success!

these are great tips. which is a great way to get a bunch of backlinks with diverse anchor text (i.e. naked url, call to action) and inner pages. i saw some service on BHW that offers 1000 comment links no follow for like 5 bucks. would this be a good route?

Probably not. Most of the blog comments produced by those Fiverr gigs reside on pages with hundreds of other no follow comments. For one, no follow has little ranking power (just diversification) and appearing on pages with hundreds of other links can look spammy. You better of using Web 2.0s or forum profiles IMO. Either way, make sure they are do follow.

just a quick question should each Web 2.0 be direct to the money site and if i should have 1 or 2 non keywords to the money page to start working on the numbers, 90% of my anchor text are keywords...;-(

How many links is ahrefs.com showing for your site? How heavily have you backlinked your inner pages with exact match anchor text?

First, stay away from any web 2.0s which use nofollow links. They will not help you get out of the Penguin rut if they are linking directly to your site with them. Your first tier backlinks should be all do follow to your site. Certainly you could power your first tier up/index them with some no follow web 2.0s and other no follow links. But I never did that for my sites. I used direct URLs to my sites with the anchor text format as I noted above. I did not link images, dilute the anchor text with "click here," "this site," etc. Dealing with exact match domains, where even natural links resulted in over-optimized backlinks because people omitted the .com, the fastest way out for me was using naked URLs.

Depending on the number of backlinks you already have, you may want to broaden your horizon and get some drip feed services which will produce links for you daily on auto pilot. I'm testing out some service providers right now to see how effective they are. The ones that produce results will likely get a lot of work from me in the near future.

Backlinks 1394, non kw is only 180, ive put a plan together to drip feed the rest to make it 50/50 split so cross that hurdle first then go from there, i did use a few services on here but dont really know if its had any positive effect as my impressions have gone down, so plan is clear up the mess first then run a few cycles and see what happens....
