Hello BHW! I'm a musician (duh!) and I have everything prepared to show it to the world... except the band. Being a DIY musician is really hard (I don't want to be one more of the thousands, I want to break the industry), so I want to get to know the industry first. One of the things musicians look up the most, when they get serious, is mentions from popular blogs, to get a trustful person to share them, and blogs are more open to work with other blogs than musicians, that's why I chose to open one.

What following program should I use (I don't want to invest any money on this BLOG yet, I'm more centered in spending in my music career, maybe a free trial)? If it works really well I will buy it later. Also, where do you think it's better to build my blog? Wordpress, Blogger or Tumblr? I know I got my questions than answers but I've never done this before and I thought it would be best if you answered in here so we have a big music marketing thread.

I've read quite a lot about music marketing, so feel free to ask.

I always repeat, a musician that want to get in the music industry have to understand that it takes time, dedication (everybody agrees there) AND INVESTMENT. Music is a business like any other business. The talent is not enough anymore, you have to spend money on your promotion, in order to get your name out there. There is tons of people competing for the exact same spot as you, and at least a few of them will ave money to put in.

I started producing HopHop & RnB music about 10 years ago. I was on the soundclick forum trying to "collab" with some american artist (being french it was already a big achievement to work with foreign people). The real breakthough in my "career" (havent made tons of money off of it, but some), happened when I started investing actual money in it.

I got a domain name, I got a pro soundcloud, a pro subscription to some beat selling store, and a twitter bot. Guess what. That exact same month I made $400 in beat sales. That's when I understand that there is 2 distinct kind of people in the music :
    - The ones who keep making excuses of "I'm broke, i can't invest, please help me", begging for people to listen to their song, spamming with twitter mentions, asking to "collab", yet those people have the money to buy decent clothes, cigarettes, weed, alcohol and hang out with friends.
    - The ones who invest a little money in it. Those people are invested in their music. They are not waiting for some magic to happen, they are doing it themselves. Paid promotion, nice design, nice cover, nice youtube channel.

At some point I filtered all the request I had in DM for "collaborations". I told everyone I only did collab in exhange of money. Not because I was greedy, but because people that are really invested in their music won't have a problem spending a few bucks in it. It can be only $10, but those $10 with create a huge gap between the "broke guys" and the "motivated people".

Long Story short, I have now 136K followers on my twitter account, and people are coming everyday proposing me money to help them with their marketing, or even making music with me.
    That's the result of investment.

So OP, get $100, get yourself a nice website, a decent bot, some photoshots, and work your magic.

I totally agree with you, and I will invest A LOT of money on my career, what I'm saying, and it's perfectly fine, it's that I can't do it all on my own, I want to wait until I have my band ready so we can split costs and the marketing work. I'm not a pretty face or a singer, I'm a composer and a keyboard, I NEED other people. I can't get photoshots without the band. I've got the $100 and I will buy CDBaby's bandhost when we start playing.

this guy plain out gets it.

you CANNOT make it without hussle. The fact you say you want a "free-trial" throws me off right at the beginning. I am a huge music enthusiast, producer, and promoter myself. I run a youtube channel with 20k+ subscribers as well as had my own work placed in commercials for major brands. Trust me when I say...you CAN and MUST make it "by yourself." I waited for a while for others to realize my dream. It never happened. I started owning up to my time wasting and put myself to work. Before I continue I must say.. if your music is awful, then nothing that follows this matters. You need to actually make halfway decent music to have a chance.

You have to create some form of way that people will actually care about what you are doing. Blogs don't check submissions. Plain and simple. And creating one now, in my opinion, is a waste of time and resources. Focus on making music. All of the major players are already setup and you would need something pretty creative to get the audience want. My advice? Make contacts. We live in a world of Facebook, where you can find anyone if you know what you are looking for. Pick out your favorite blogs, and search it. I will bet anything that some of their writers pop-up. Add them as a friend. Do not. Do Not. Do not. Do not. Do not blast them with your music. "Like" some of their posts over a month or so and maybe message them saying you loved their article they recently posted. Little shit like this matters. Give something to them, in hope they may take 15 secs one day to skim through your track. I will be honest... that is all you will get. Spam them without building some kind of relationship, and you are f****d for good. Trust me.

Once you get any form of blog support, keep in constant contact. It will obviously help in the future. I'm honestly confused though on what kind of music you are even making. You say you play keyboard but you don't have a band? Electronic Music? Indie?

Tayax, me and you should chat sometime. PM me.

I WILL invest in my music career all I need to. It's just I'm not a pretty face, I'm more of what's behind a band (image, marketing, composing), so I need to form one. Tried to sing, but my voice isn't good enough. I make pop music, with hints of jazz, or rock, or hard rock, basically everything. I can't PM, add me on skype mauriciodelossan. Cheers

One week since I started with Twtdominator, and I just bought the domain and an e-mail service. Received three submissions on my Tumblr blog and two more on my Twitter, hope that will rise up!

I'm looking for a Tumblr or Facebook partner, the idea is to sell campaigns to musicians across several platforms, if you're interested, PM me.

This week's been pretty slow. I bought a domain and got into Shuffler fm. I've received 2 more submissions on Twitter and I got my personal e-mail to look more professional. I'll try to scale the number of followers (I've been following 300-350 a day, I'll get to 600 now), but I don't know what else to do, if you have any suggestions, I appreciate it.
