My Thoughts on SEO After 3 Years and What I Would Do If I Started Over

Around 3 years ago I began my journey into SEO. I began by actually not know what I was doing, I ran a blog where I discussed anything that was on my mind, and thought from reading bullshit A Listers I was going to make something out of it because I am doing what I like.

After almost a year of doing this I got nowhere, I was giving up and wanted to drop this whole business. Until a certain person came my way and we started chatting. He was a black hat expert, and ran a network of websites on his own. His monthly income from Adsense and Amazon came to a total of $15,000 a month on average.

He usually charged people for an hour of his time, but for some odd reason he taught me everything he knew. I helped him out in return whenever I could. Anyways, he taught me many methods, I wanted the quickest one so I began building small websites targeting a few keywords that were very small. Basically small niche websites.

It went well and I started earning a little bit of money, but the work I found to be very annoying and I began to lose my energy for it. The biggest problem for me was investment. I need to build up a network and continue buying websites, which by that point I had no money for.

Things continued, I got a few clients, did work here and there. I still continue to work with clients, but I have built up my own network. Things are decent now, but what if I could start over?

That is really why I am writing this, for all the people who are starting out and want my advice, I highly recommend that you focus on one large subject. It will take a long time for it to build up, but then you never really have to do a lot of link building and worrying about Google slaps.

If you focus on one website, write very good articles, and actually create a community, you will naturally get traffic and links.

And this my friends is how you can actually run an online business without the headaches.

SUMMARY: If I started over I would not make small websites, I would build one big website and focus on that only. Write really good articles and create a community around it. This method does not create headaches that make you worry about Google slaps or getting backlinks. Period.

PS. If any spelling mistakes found or grammar errors I apologize, I'm sick at the moment, to lazy to reread it.

This post ties in nicely with the latest Google (Mr) Panda update. Google claims to be able to spot the difference between a useful site and a spam site, how does it do this - i have no idea, that that is one clever algo.

Google has been controlled through spam techniques which look like they may be coming to and end, they won't stop all togetehr but they will certainly slow down.

Going back to the original post, Google wants you to create a well though out site with original content which provides useful information. Do this and you need never worry about algo changes or link building ever again!

Pretty much its true, I know that small sites can still make a lot of money, if they have unique content. But it really is a mess when you have too many. I've had 50 before that I was managing and it was tough to keep them all up to date.

It is best to focus on a one subject.

    definitely on point
what I would add is a mix of the two

have the main site and a backup both in the same field ( i am a stiggler for a backup plan)
but I would also suggest if at all possible let the topic be one of interest. As time goes even if not a true interest you better be fuelled by the fire of the topic (live it, breathe it, drink it)

    congrats on your success

    Thanks,

Your 100% right, the topic has to be something you enjoy writing about or you will lose energy and give up. That was the difference for me when I was opening up an authority website, it was between science and business. My passion was for science, but I knew business websites made the money. But I wasn't interested in business at all.

The problem with 1 site is, that if something for some reason goes wrong, you lose everything. All eggs in one-same basket isn't a good idea.

You can't lose it, if you do everything in a legit manner it won't happen. Unless your data center burns down and there is no backup, yeah maybe...

But if you are talking about Google, well they won't do anything if you are doing everything in a legit way.

I thought the same way as you. But than I quickly realized if you focus on one site. and for some reason get a G penalty, or slap or whatever there goes all your income.

someone once told me when I first started to never have all your eggs in one basket. and it makes total sense and i've always gone by that.

*edit* Oops vision sorry I pretty much said exactly what you did. Shoulda read all the replies before i sent mine.

Don't spend all the cash that you earn. Invest in assets. Having a
good cash flow (even diversified) with no assets is stupid

I can understand and respect what you have written here.

However, I cannot help but point out that if Matt Cutts had infiltrated BHW and was trying to dissuade people from using black hat tactics, he would probably write something like this.

Basically you're recommending a full return to white hat, quality content and creating communities.

It works, given time and resources. However, there will always be a place for spam.

In my own experience I have my main money site and do write reasonably good content , I actually sell items and I have all the reason to make good to my customers who come to buy my products. Now, that said my I also practice the BH tips like link wheel, link building and all the regular run of the mill things that every one talks about. My ranking is solid so far , and the reason is cause I never spun any of my articles, I hire writers and even though the quality is not super good, its not spit out from a machine . So far this has worked for me, and the reason I am coming OUT now is to add my 2 cents and THAT IS , I started out to make quick bucks by spam , and nefarious :D techniques . But soon i realized doing things the "making a quick buck" way does not last at all, you visualize that your are the Rat and spinning the wheel as fast as you can and never go anywhere. What works for me is make one good site and do a good job on that and use the so called BH technique on the support sites.

I think this advice is very sound. I've found a solid foundation is needed before moving outwards. Thanks for sharing!

Really? Too bad that never worked for me. Or for anybody I know for that matter.

Also, maybe your mentor didn't explained you, or maybe he did but you missed the point, but having a network of sites will greatly improve your growth rate if you want to start a big site. Having 100 sites about blue widgets, red widgets, green widgets, etc. will give you a great head start if you launch a all-about-widgets type of site.
