I've been a member here for awhile now and it's about time I actually wrote something useful. I have helped out here and there and got involved with discussions but nothing really of value, so I'm hoping this thread will do just that.

I'm not really sure how to begin this thread so I'm just going to dive straight into it. Basically a few months ago I discovered a thread with a very good concept so please note the method is not my own, but the extension of beating google places is. It basically involved you creating an EDM for a dentist within a city. For example, dentistsinnewyork.com with targetting keyword "dentists in new york".

Once you rank the website you sell adspace to interested dentists within that area. Great concept! So it got me thinking and researching. So for a week or so I got my head down and did a lot of research until finally hitting gold with a great niche that wasnt a very saturated one. The keywords were either low-medium or medium with good local searches. Bingo!

I bought the EDM, set up the website and got backlinking. I hit page one relatively quickly (within 2 weeks if remember correctly). However, I hit a brick wall... Google Places. 7th through to 1st where all google places listings. Didnt think much of it at the time and kept building links. But I started to lose heart once I couldn't push any higher. I even started to get a bit skepticle as to whether it was possible to beat google places and did some research, and the responses were mixed... Not good enought so I decided to find out for myself.

Although I was building quality links, something wasnt working. So I decided to take another approach. Because the niche isnt very saturated, the EDM for subdomains and usernames for all the top web2.0's we're available. Bonus! I decided to make these properties very high quality, and manually added posts and content, change themes all manually etc ... so no software at all.

The properties I used were:

Wordpress
Edublogs
Blogspot
Tumblr
Posterous
LiveJournal

I know there are more to use, many more, but I wanted to create high quality properties. 6 high quality tiers are much better than 25 low quality ones.

What I then did is get unique articles written for me and post them on my original website. I did 4 unique rewrites for each article, one rewrite for each of the high quality web2.0's and posted each one manually. I then spun the rewrites and created more web2.0's pointing to each of the high quality web2.0's. For example the rewritten article for wordpress, the spun articles would only point to wordpress, and the rewritten article for edublogs, the spun articles would only point to edutblogs... so they never interlinked.

I then did a lot of bookmarking to all of these links. I also blasted the second web2.0s with forum profiles and blog comments. But I didnt stop there. Each unique article that was posted on my website I bought a high quality reputable service here and linked to it. The services usually allow 2-3 urls and 2-3 keywords per service and what I did is link one to the article (deeplink) and one homepage link (for my target keyword).

Once this service was completed, I then blasted those backlinks. After about 6-7 weeks, I finally hit top of google. A jump from 8th - 1st and ranking above google places :D

Now I've only been there 48 hours (I know you may think I'm being hastey) but if I can jump like that and rank above google places, I'm pretty confident I will stay there. All I need to do is maintain the quality of my links :)

I've seen in a lot of places people asking whether its possible to beat google places. I always see mixed responses, but I'm telling you, beating google places is possible... you just have to work for it.

I'm currently in the process of writing sales letters ready to send by posts to all the businesses with a proposal.

Money spent - around $200-$250... Hopefully by month 2 I will have more than made this back and its all profit from there ;)

If you have any questions, please fire away I will be more than happy to answer any questions :)

Great post, I have often thought about building web 2.0's with the same care and quality as you do your money page. Afterall the concept is making YOUR page an authority, how does that happen? Content and other authorities in the niche pointing to you!

Good job with your success, let me know if you make some sales! Also what is stopping you from going to one of the "dentists" in your area and offering him SEO?

You have already proven you can rank for that term, all other SEO companies are only speculating they can do it.

Great post.

I've made websites for some local businesses and whilst they aren't EMDs it's encouraging to know that google places can be beaten.

Well this was my intention to create authority tiers which in turn would give my money site authority.

I suppose I could do it with dentists in my area, but I think this niche is a bit saturated now as many others are probably doing the same. Why compete and play catchup in the dentist niche when I can steam ahead with this niche?

I'm not a very good salesman so selling the adspace will be the tricky part for me, but once site one is making money (if I manage to sell), I do the same again with another website in another city for the same niche.

:)

Congrats on beating Google Places and hope you keep winning.

Would you be willing to post here (or pm) the services you used? I could not find good ones for the total price you paid.

Thanks anyway.

I am doing the same but with about 50 properties I made. Every property gets articles weekly and I spam (xrumer, scrapebox) a bit. In the end they will link to my money page. I don't know the result yet as I'm building it right now. But in about 3 months I will start linking to my money site for the first time. About 5 links a week. So that's 10 weeks before they all point to my money site. Very curious about the result!

seems EDM has some real power at this moment, i tested 2 sites with emd and they both have quite good ratings after 4-7 days

Thanks for this info. I have had success beating people in G places, the next question is how we can contact prospective clients. Can you tell your pricing metrics?

Thanks

Great info here. And just to add onto the conversation, in my experience, there is HUGE opportunity here for anyone that is willing to contact the local business owners and "pitch" them on why they need to be on your site. I have a background in telemarketing, so its no thing for me to get them on the phone and sell them anything I want. Email works, but there's nothing like being able to make a short 5-10 min call and end the conversation with a monthly contract for $200-$2,000 a month.

My very first client like this was a personal injury attorney that landed me $1,900/month with a 12 month contract

Trust me when I say that local small business owners are more than clueless when it comes to marketing their business online. As long as you can show them results up front (i.e. having pages already ranked), they will jump on board right away and be very appreciative.

I should really write up a whole course on this process. Its allowed me to land some pretty major accounts.

I didnt mean dentists literally, that is why I used quotes. What I meant was you can also offer SEO for clients in the same KW niche you are ranking for, in addition to plain old advertising for your site.

great thread. i have read a lot of simular methods using web 2.0s . i am doing almost the same thing but my problem is getting the links indexed by google. what service do you use for indexation/?

Congratulations!

Did you mean EDM or EMD? What is EDM if it's different than EMD?

They're both the same

EDM - Exact Domain Match
EMD - Exact Match Domain

Depends which one you like to use :)

Scale this up and hire a sales rep on commission.

That or just bite it and hammer the phone until you're comfortable with it. I wouldn't necessarily call myself an extrovert, but I worked a couple sales jobs with heavy cold calling and pretty quickly I was able to come off reasonably polished and relaxed. If you're half articulate, which it sounds like you are from your writing, you're halfway there already.

these types of posts are awesome. Gives everyone a blueprint on how to rank correctly. When you mentioned that you blasted the second web2.0s with forum profiles and blog comments, what did you use to blast them with or did you outsource?

On the unique article that was posted on your website, what was the high quality reputable service here for linking?

Wouldn't it be better to only allow one client to be on your website and change the website so it only promotes that client? Then you could do some split testing with a 800 number.
