I believe my sites were affected by Penguin 'cause since about the time people started wailing I noticed that one of my sites (my most valuable) had been dropped alongside the others.

Interestingly, after logging into Analytics a couple hours ago, I discovered that I had some traffic from the search engines. Then I checked for most of the keywords I ranked number one on Google for, and almost all of them had returned.

While I don't know if this is permanent or not, I would like SEO experts to give some valuable advice on this here. Should I now go ahead to create backlinks? I didn't do anything to my site after Penguin.

Keep building good back links and posting relevant content and it will stabilize.

Did you make any change to your site? Did you change backlink tactics?

As a matter of fact, I am pleased to report the SAME thing as the OP!!!

Some sites still down, but everything is climbing at the very least and some are back up to their original place.

Makes me wonder if they reversed the algo somehow after they realized Bing was starting to have more relevant search results? ;)

EDIT: Oh yeah and in my case... some of them were changed after Penguin yes. as a matter of fact... my sites can be divided into 4 groups after penguin. 1- no change sites, 2- experiment #1 (remove ALL wordpress tags), experiment #2 (link site everywhere on network), and experiment #3 (signifcant reduction of main keyword density in light of over optimization).............. but yeah.... the "overly-optimized" sites are among the unchanged that are back near the top!

Can you just confirm what you said above? sites that were over optermised have come back to original serp's??? did you make changes to these sites?

Which sites came back and what did you do to them?
Which sites stayed at poor serps? and what did you do to them?

    Trying to find a pattern?

It seems like Google is introducing algorithmic changes to reverse some of the damage Penguin did, as its well known that Penguin didn't help search result quality at all.

billsfan mentioned above that he removed all wordpress tags - has anyone tried this? Has it given anyone else positive results?

This seems to be the "Google Pattern"... overkill when a change is first introduced... and then slowly they "try" to fix the mistakes. I wouldn't do too much right away with the site... nothing wrong with waiting to make sure the fall-out is over... you can start backlinking soon enough.
