My site went from #1 to #48 overnight. Was it me?

This is of course heartbreaking because the page was ugly and out of date before so we decided to update it since Google felt it was worth of a #1 position, we thought we would make it so. Big mistake.

So now I am left wondering. Google shows 1600 pages and there are only have that. But I do see that all of the old pages are still indexed. Most of the new pages have not kept the same names. A few have but not most. I was told some time ago that these pages would automatically drop off over time so I didn't do anything with them. Now I'm beginning to wonder if they do actually drop off? Why? Take for example that if you have pages that you do not want visitors to your website to view and they don't link directly to any pages from within your site; google says you can submit a .txt page wit the urls on it.

So in a case like that where google indexes urls with no direct links from your site, it would be about the same thing as old pages from my site that have been remodeled. At least that is my thinking anyway. So do I need to do anything? It sucks badly to lose that kind of rank just because I made a site look better. I have a bounce rate of 23% and average site time of 5:23. I'm just bummed.

If the site is fairly new then I guess it is a possiblity. Also very extensive redesigns often will result is a shift in Serps. Probably patience and continued link building can reverse the drop..

Don't fix something that isn't broken. I have a few sites that look like crap but are ranking high. I don't touch them for fear of screwing something up!

They will never drop off I can still see some pages from a site we designed in 2002 .. I suggest you to do a 301 redirect from OLD urls to your new URL .. that way you can get google juice from it and than they will be changed to the new URL ... keep in mind that the new URL's must have same sort of related data .

just undo the changed you did, get some quality web 2.0 backlinks, resubmit the sitemap, and see if it comes back.
If your serps are changing everyday, then its google dance, so wait for a week or so...

For a longtail keyword, my site was number 13. Then one day it fell off the top 1000! After a couple of days, it went back to 43. Now, it's back to its original 13.

Did you build any links to it with the redesign? I have seen it drop like that and then come back from building links.

I've had this problem. I bought an exact domain name match and did some backlinks and got to number 1 on page 1 within a short space of time. Continued working on it, and i am now on page 24 :( Probably just the google dance, so will keep going :)

I have a website with a very poor design which rank top 3 on G. I have no need to redesign until G do somethings. My other perfect website is not doing very well. I used all SEO tec. and perfect coding and great design ....... NO NO NO it is in 2 page. So leave your website alone if they are doing well. Good luck.

Did you change the title of the page? if yes, just wait for about a month. It will come back.
